For the Zin, chill for 20 minutes.
For the Merlot (white merlot is delicious, though it's sweet) room temperature. Take the cork out 10 minutes prior to serving.

i am not much of a wine drinker but my mother was and as for the white zinfandel it should be served chilled and the merlot should be served at room tempter around 55-65 degrees is best for that kind of flavor

It is chilled, although some like it warm. Just because there is a politically correct way to serve wine doesn't mean you have to do it that way. I won't drink red wine at a restaurant because it's warm, but I'll stick it in the fridge at home. Do what YOU like. That's the "correct" way. :-)
