Terrific question that made me lol.
Satan like God is an invention of man. A clumsy symbolic figure that represents evil in ancient morality tales.
I think he was once an archangel who had the temerity to stage a revolt against God and was banished to hell. He must therefore been good at one time.
Anyway "better to rule in hell than serve in heaven." Paradise Lost - Milton, also Captain Kirk in The Wrath of Khan.

Satan is the invention of Christianity. He is the entity all Christians blame when they do something bad (eg Satan made me do it). The whole Satan thing is a cop out. If you do something bad be brave enough to take the blame and the consequences of your actions.
The whole thing that pagans worship Satan is totally untrue yet some more bad press for people who do not believe in Christianity.

Depends on your point of view, as the enimy of God you would say so. But you also have to consider that he was gods right hand angel for a reason. Satan looks over us just as God does and when the time comes the good go to god and the bad to satan.

They both have very strick policies on how far they will go when interveening. Imagin when you are on a diet and you find a bar of chocolate (temptation right) how can that be so bad.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan is bad, but i don't think that any of the people before completely explained why. As a Christian, i feel obligated to answer your question because I believe as do all Christians, that in the end, Satan will be defeated. There's a reason why we believe this. Satan is evil. God created Satan, but Satan didn't start out bad. He reflected God's light. that's a pretty good thing, and he was beautiful. Satan had power, too. But his pride was what ruined it for him. He decided to overthrow God, or tried to, anyway, and for that reason, God kicked both him and his followers, large number of angels, out of heaven. They fell to earth. When God made man, satan was jealous and tempted man to do evil, and sin came to the world when Adam ate the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden. refer to Genesis if you want a source, or to see where i'm getting this from. Since then, it has been Satan's sole mission to gather as many people as he can from God and take them to Hell with him, because he knows that God loves humans, and he wants to do as much as he can to get back at God. And Satan rejoiced every time someone turns away from God. Satan does not rule over Hell, as many have been mislead to think. Jesus Christ presides over Hell, or rather makes sure that those who have not come to him for deliverance from their sins, don't get out. They can't leave hell. Hell is a fiery place where people eternally burn and never die. Satan will burn there too, in the lake of fire and brimstone. There is a division so that those in hell can't cross over to those on earth, in heaven, and for future times, the New Jerusalem. So this is why Satan is bad- he is the enemy of all those who declare the Lord Jesus as their God.

Let's see-- I think if Satan put up a personals ad it would run something like this.

Young, hip, smoothtalking person seeks anybody willing to give him an ear. Will easily convince those who choose to listen to him that they are the coolest person on earth, who deserves wealth, power, and fame at any cost.

This one ain't looking for love, just fun times for all (well, until he decides that he's had enough, and then it will be fun times for him and him alone). In fact, this one hates love so much, he'll begin to put the hurt on you as soon as you begin to experience it. Love for this one is like sulferic acid.

This one knows how to politic. He knows how to couch his lies in just enough truth to really win you over. The longer you listen, the longer and more the truth will be perverted until you are lost in his lies.

But, if you're just looking for a fun quickie or two before your life goes into the **itter, he's the man for you!

No Christian theology allows for an absolute evil. Existence (according to Christian thought) is inherently good, since it is a product of God. Things are only evil in so far as they are incomplete expressions of God. Total evil would be total none existence. It's like health and injury; if I have a wound on my arm, that wound is where the flesh is missing. If I were totally wounded, I would cease to exist.

Satan is a personification of evil. Even for atheists this term has the same meaning. It is like with Jack frost - he cant be hot.
