There are various theories about why this rule would have come about. However, for Jews, there is only one reason - because it says so in the Bible (Leviticus 11:7). Generally, all animals that don't chew the cud and have a cloven hoof are forbidden - pork is named as a specific example because it does have a cloven hoof but doesn't chew the cud. Various other foods are also forbidden, such as shellfish and various birds. On top of the explicit restrictions in the Bible, there's a whole load of rules about how meat should be killed, laws about avoiding mixing meat and milk, and lots more.

Because in the scriptures of the Torah, God deemed pigs and swine to be unclean food, and not to be eaten ( Deuteronomy Chapter 14, Verse 8). But not only Pork is considered unclean...in fact, the entire of Deuteronomy Chapter 14 really lays out very specific laws on what is or is not "clean" (Kosher) food that people can eat. Shellfish and certain type of bird are also out.

Oh wait Jewish do not go by new test., so here is one from the OLD test. "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all, things, even the green herbs Genesis9:3. So out of God's mouth he said this food is good, but maybe some people who claim to listen to Gods word missed this chapter. Jesus said it is no what you put in your mouth that defiles you, but what comes out.Matthew15:11, 17-19. AND CHICKENS EAT THERE OWN poop, TOO(most animals do.)

Yes, its because of the roots of their religion, and the fact that back in the day pork and shellfish were considered unclean, and a good way to get sick. Shellfish in particular because they go rotten and stinky so easily, but pork also because pigs roll around in their dirt and eat most anything.
I thought I'd mention my jewish mate's mum who eats prawns, because she "interprets the tora" differently to everyone else... :|
I also know a jew who eats pepperoni pizza, insisting its made of beef.

It is considered an unclean food. In Biblical times, disease was traced to certain animals, pigs among them. You can still get diseases from pork that is not thoroughly cooked. Check Deuteronomy in the Old Testament for more information.

No, but my favorite Jew is Jesus!
They can't eat pork because it's an unclean animal; it's a scavanger, meaning it'll eat dead things and what not. God forbids the Israelites to touch un-clean things, so they can't eat animals that eat unclean things. Same goes for shrimp and other scavanger animals. They can't eat that either.

Get the book, "The Maker's Diet" and you'll find out why none of us should eat pork or shellfish. They get filled with toxic waste from eating, their bodies don't pass on these toxins.

It is true that we do not eat pork, because the pig is not a kosher animal.
G-d in our Bible defines a kosher four-legged animal as one that chews its cud and has split feet. For example: Cows and sheep.

It depends on how religious you are.
Most Jewish people don't eat pork because it's against their religion. They consider pigs as dirty, filthy animals as they eat their own feces. This stems from way back in the day.

It is true that Jewish people can't eat pork, or shellfish - because it is not Kosher - ie their religion forbids them from eating it.
