never view a car in the wet and only in good natural light if you have to view in these conditions make an excuse you will have to view again with your dad/boyfriend but defanatly male as you are more likely to be told the truth wet/dim conditions can and will hide exterior marks and even small dents look at the engine has it any signs of oil if so why? has it been cleaned up more than the rest of the car again why? was the engine running when you met him why? could it have starting problems put lights on start car does lights fade much if so battery could be on its way out make sure you drive it on a road you know so you can concentrate on the car and not so much on the drivng and where you are going. take it slowly with allequipment turned off ie radio/heater and windows up and listen any squeeks could be suspension. back on the road brake safely hard but not too hard any vibration in steering wheel could suggest brake problems check all tyres you will see a leagle treadmark which is an extra piece of rubber between the tread as it sugest this is the leagle limit check exhaust if car sounds like it is roaring could mean new one how long have they had it? less than 12mounth? why? whats wrong?always haggle if too high give silent treatment still too high say mum/dad partner anyone who is not there will never pay that this should if not already bring it down to their min and pick out any vaults you see remember dirty seats need to be cleaned most valeter only do this on full valets £60+
follow these rules and good luck

say you've seen a very similar car at a different garage which is x amount cheaper. dont act too keen on the car but show an interest. the salesman will be on commission lol so he will want your custom ;)
also ask if it comes with full service history. ask for a test drive to make sure you like the way it drives not just its appearance! maybe take your brother or a friend who knows about cars. annoyin but true, a salesman is less likely to pull the wool over another blokes eyes.
hope that helps

Whatever the saleman says to you , don't sign for anything there and then, tell him you are going home to think about it that way you show him you are no easy pushover. He will ring you the next day and offer you a better deal.
Oh make sure the car has a full service history .

Have any used vehicle checked out by your own mechanic prior to purchase. Any dealer that will not allow you to do so should not get your business. You should expect to pay for the mechanic to check the car over, but it is money well spent!

Go to used car lots...reputable ones...diesels are a bit more complex than gas counterparts, so use caution. A good choice for a used diesel would be any VW or Mercedes diesel.

check it has an engine :-)
Seriously - take a guy with you that knows something about them or get the AA or RAC to check the car. Sadly women tend to get ripped off most xx

Just be aware that because diesel is fashionable at the moment the equivalent petrol would be cheaper, youll probably have to drive 70,000 miles to recoup the difference.
Excessive smoke, difficult starting. Make sure its started from cold and it should burst into life pretty quickly. Check it pulls like an express train.

if you don't know much about cars take a friend who does with you,
also remember you are the customer and you don't need to buy their car, if you feel pressured walk away.

Kick the tyres a few times, that'll mark you out as someone 'in the know' and a good deal will soon follow...
And keep away from Fiats.
