my grandparents use to make a fried doughit was an italian thing i think it was a breakfast type thing im not sure all i know is that was fried dough and you put powdered sugar on it does anyone know what im talking about

hi i'am not quite sure how your grandparents did this but i have found this works for me..buy a loaf of frozen bread and thaw out on the counter.( make sure that you keep it covered so it doesn't dry out while its thawing out) heat up some oil in a deep pot you can tell the oil is ready when you put the tip of a wooden spoon handle into the oil and if it bubbles around the handle your good to go; keep in mind to use caution so not to get burned..after the dough has thawed out sprinkle some flour onto the counter and place the dough onto it cut the dough into pieces and st reach the dough a bit,,drop into the hot oil and fry until golden brown then turn over to cook the remaining side remove from the hot oil; drain onto paper towels after wards sprinkle with powder sugar/ cinn or even brush with melted butter..remember...use caution when doing this or any other type of frying....good luck

Fried dough is different than a funnel cake. Fried dough is made from bread dough. It is deep fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. It was used as a breakfast, but, today it can be found at carnivals as a snack. It is really good!!!!!!!!!

All purpose flour 1¾ cups
Salt ½ tsp
Warm tap water, about 105 degrees 1 cup
Active dry yeast 2½ tsp
Vegetable oil for frying 4 cups
Confectioners’ sugar for sprinkling




Mix flour and salt together and set aside.

Pour water into a medium bowl and whisk in the yeast.

Stir in the salted flour with a rubber spatula until you have a rather wet dough.


Cover bowl loosely with plastic wrap and let dough rise at room temperature for about an hour, or until dough is double in size and very puffy.

Heat oil to 375 degrees F., and line cookie sheets with paper towels or brown paper for draining.


Dip a tablespoon into the hot oil, then quickly use it to spoon up some of the risen dough. Use another spoon to scrape the dough off into the hot oil.


I like to fry no more than two or three fritters at a time so that I can better keep them from burning. Fry until they are a deep golden color. Drain on prepared pan.

Dust generously with confectioners’ sugar before serving. This recipe, in Cookies Unlimited by Nick Malgieri, makes about 24 zeppole.

I make it all the time for my kids when i make homemade bread..when you are done putting your buns and bread in the pans to rise save a bit of dough.cut off a small slice and stretch it out put a hole in the middle and fry until golden brown on both sides and sprinkle with sugar or sugar and cinnamon mixed together, I use lard for frying.ENJOY

I do know what you are talking about. My grandma taught me how to do the same thing. All you have to do is get your self a can of biscuits, open them up and pock a hole in the middle of theme and put theme in your deep fryer, after thy brown on both sides take them out in put in a big bowl with your favorite toppings and with a good lid and then shack. Now you can enjoy like I did.
