Fried dough is found at most fairs, carnivals, amusement parks. It is fried bread made of a yeast dough. It is made by deep-fat-frying a portion of risen yeast dough.

Fried dough is also known as elephant ears, frying saucers, and in the case of smaller pieces, doughboys; these foods are virtually identical to each other, and recognizably different from other fried dough foods such as doughnuts, beignets, or fritters.

An Italian variant common in North America is zeppole.

Funnel cake is a somewhat similar food but is made with an unleavened batter and shaped by being poured through a funnel.

i remember my grandmother frying dough that was left over from baking pies, it was always a treat to have extra dough that would get fried and sprinkled with sugar while it was still warm. brings back memories of lazy sunday mornings from years ago

Yeah I love that stuff too, I usually get it at a fair too, it's really good. It usually is with cinnamon and sugar on top. Well here a recipe if you need it.

Native American, "Indian Fry-bread" is very close to what you are talking about. of course your Grandparents would have been using a simpler recipe (which is good). It can be as fancy or as plain as one wants it depending on taste (and ignoring it's an artery clogger).., but hey.., that never stopped me from eating hearty. ;-)
