Every time, lately, whenever I take both of my miniature dachshunds for a walk, the oldest one goes crazy and growls, barks, even lunges at me - when we're done, and I let them back in the house. Then, he has a little "time out" to get rid of his temper tantrum, and is fine - acting like nothing happened. He's never, ever done this before, and, I wonder why he's doing it now?

you have what i call the "explorer breed". Those little dogs LOVE to leave the house and go for LONG walks. My neighbor has one and at least once a weeks finds a way to escape the house and yard and goes for travels around the neighborhood and block. I've taken my GSDs out for walks and seen him about 1/2-1 mile down the road and even accross the street and in teh most strangest of places. We always joke around that the little guy has a "traveling personna". It looks like your might have it too. What you do when you give him a time out period is fine enough. It isn't a matter of disrespect its just him/her wanting to stay outside and walk more. they are explorers. Disrespect would be if they try and bite you when you pick them up or pet them. That would be bad and needs to be handled immediately. Barking and lunging at you or the door is normal for a lot of little dogs.

Its a possibility he does not like the other dogs and is jelous everytime you spend time with them. I think he might also want you all to himself. And i think hes doing it now because maybe your punishing him a lot more then spending time with him, and you might not notice but you might be spending more time with the other two and hes probably mad at you. And after his timeout he acts like it never happened because you know how dogs have a short memory of somethings so he probably forgot. Good Luck. And remember if you do notice you are spending more time with the other two i would spend some time with him.

Your dog seems to get into kind of a frenzy when he gets in the house. Put him in his crate right away for a little while, like you have been doing.
Then, talk to your vet about the change in behavior.

His problem might just be that he is getting older and his sight and hearing isn't the greatest anymore. Good Luck!
