At first, he was a perfect angel in heaven with God. He was the anointed cherub that was covering over the Garden of Eden.(Ezekiel 28:11-19) However, he later thought to much of himself and wanted the worship that rightly belongs to God.--Matthew 4:8-10. This angel, Satan, spoke to Eve by means of a serpent. By telling her lies, he got her to disobey God. Satan thus attacked what is called God's "sovereignty," or position as the Most High. Satan questioned whether God rules in a worthy way and in the best interests of His subjects. Satan also brought into question whether any human would remain loyal to God. By doing this, Satan made himself God's enemy. That is why he came to be called Satan the Devil.--Genesis 3:1-5; Job 1:8-11; Revelation 12:9.The word "devil" means slanderer or to tell wicked lies about another person. "Satan" means an enemy, resistor or an opposer. These are terms given to God's chief enemy. Satan is also called "the father of the lie" being that he told the first lie about God when he said to Eve that "you positively will not die."--Genesis 3:4,5. Also, he is called other names such as,"the original serpent", a "manslayer", and "great dragon."

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan is Lucifer the "angel of light" people always depict Satan as a horrible red demon, however he is actually one of the most beautiful angels God created.
He became vain and arrogant and as a result was cast out of heaven along with a 3rd of the angels who followed him.
He is now known as "the prince of the earth" and is left to stop as many people as possible knowing and believing in God.
His comeuppance will not be forgotten and everyone has a choice of who they want to follow..........keep in mind everything of this world that draws us away from God come from him.

God created Lucifer as a perfection of beauty,
He was wisest among all the creation of God.
There was nothing unknown to him.
He used to worship God with musics. He was appointed as a Cherub that cover (guard) the throne of the Most High.
He was the mighty one next to God.
But he thought to become greater than God. He said he will become greater than the Most High and establish his throne above the throne of God. So he was removed from the place given to him.
Then to make his own Dominion he started working against God and thus he was named as Satan.

People seem to think he used to be an angel, but that is so not true, because angels do not disobey. It is as if they are programmed not to, but humans and jinns (other life form) have that freedom. Satan was a jinn, who used to be good, but when God created humans, Satan refused to bow down to his new creation, and as he is to get sent to hell after judgement day, he decided to misguide humans so they can too follow him...something like that:S

Satan's light is an illusion. Satan, the morning star, has no light of its own, only that reflected from God. In its darker aspect it is the shadow of God's light that always turns against itself such is the nature of the adversary.

satan was the first created Angel and was called lucifer meaning the light bearer and commanded all the Heavenly Hosts of Angels.
tradition holds that none of the Angels when first created actually saw God face to face and that God communicated His glorious presence to them threw a certain light,it seems that God was testing them to give their free will to Him or not as in the case of lucifer, who was the one who after receiving Gods light would then pass this light of knowledge down through the different Angelic ranks.
after a time He grew full of his own importance and was consumed with self pride and declared to the lesser Angels that he was equal to God, and this was the first rebellious act of one of Gods creatures.
another high Angel (Archangel) called Michael rebuked and challenged lucifer`s mockery and by Gods command threw lucifer to Hell with all the legions of lesser Angels who sided with him.
