My VW bug sat for a year unused, when I went to drive it I found the clutch would not disengage. Are there any easy ways to get the clutch to release without going thru a whole engine drop and rebuild?

if your pedal does not return it could be the pedal Assembly rusted up , it is held onto the tunnel by 2 bolts ,17 mm i think, pull the throttle cable off the pedal unclip the brake master cyl. and loosen the clutch cable a bit ( on top of the trans axle ) then rotate wiggle and manipulate the pedal assy. out of the tunnel then lube ,heat and swear at (well it worked for me ) the thing , get some pullers on it and when it's apart clean and lube and re-install , if it's the far end yank the engine (1/2 hour job) and have at the shaft with penetrating oil and heat to get it to move then disassemble clean and lube and re-assemble , have fun , these are great cars , very simple and almost everything is rebuild able

Try crawling underneath, and where the clutch cable bolts thru the arm at the cross shaft. Undo the cable and try working the cross shaft arm back and forth, until the throw out bearing frees itself from the pressure plate. If that does'nt work you might have to take the 4 engine bolts loose and pull the motor away enough to get your hand or something in the bell housing to free the TO bearing . I hope that helps some.....good luck.

Try this link. But, with due respect, if you've got a VW you've got to love unbolting those four main bolts to drop the engine.
