speaking in tongues was nothing but speaking in diffirent languages, see for yourself;
Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Ac 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Ac 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Ac 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
Ac 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Ac 2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Ac 2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Ac 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God

I will try, but I don't want to Post a LONG Post.
Tongues is the evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is used as a Prayer Language for Privet Prayer, it is the Holy Spirit Praying through your spirit in words you can not utter.
Tongues is also a Gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit uses you to bring a Message to the Church in a Language that is unknown to you, when He does this, He will use you or someone else with the companion Gift of Interpretation of Tongues.
I've done this very quickly, and not in depth. Some will come up and say that Tongues is not real, don't listen. Find a good Pentecostal Church where you can learn of this for yourself. I suggest The Church Of God.

It's one of the supposed gifts of the "holy spirit". The pentecost is the event in the bible when the HS descended on the Apostles, and provided them with various special powers to go out and preach to the world. The protestant sect the Pentecostals are the main group that indulges in the practice, along with snake handling. Some groups of charismatic Catholics indulge in the behaviour as well.
Basically, true believers get themselves worked up into a religious lather and start rolling around speaking gibberish. Linguists who have studied this say that there is no relationship to any known current or extinct language, and the sounds have no discernible syntax or structure that would be compatible with a language. (which kind of defeats the purpose of the gift, which was to be able to preach to foreigners)
Essentially it is a form of group hypnosis or shared delusion. They members of the group share the belief that if the spirit is in them, they should show the gift. They have seen examples of what other people do that is accepted by the group. There is strong emotion, and strong motivation to follow the practices of the group.
People who experience the phenomena will actually believe that something real has occured. We see a similar thing in medicine with people who experience "pseudoseizures" under the influence of strong emotions or traumas. These people do not accept that it is their subconcious mind acting out, any more than people who do some "holy rolling" accept it is their own subconcious mind, submitting to the group expectation.
In a nutshell, it is nonsense, that is very easily explainable by science and the psychology of group behaviour.

Tjreamer has it right and deserves your 10 points. It's a phenomenon called "glossolalia." In the bible, the book of Acts mentions how the Apostles were able to speak in foreign languages unknown to them, but known to others. However, "speaking in tongues" as the Pentecostals use it refers to utterances in no known language - just meaningless syllables. A psychological term for this might be social facilitation. As you can see, there's a difference of opinion on this topic, depending on whether you are a practicng Christian or an objective observer.

It's a bunch of crrap.
Probably just people getting whipped up into a frenzy and putting themselves in a hyptnotic state or some other more extreme state of consciousness. Plus the feeling of social pressure and the desire to show that one has been taken over by the holy spirit, etc. It's like a bunch of pre-teen girls holding a seance and getting themselves freaked out when the lights suddenly go out. Probably a relative of mass hysteria.

It is an expression of Spiritual Ecstasy. Someone who spaeks in tongues is thought to be in an intense emotional state where they are in direct communion with God, or the holy spirit.
