I would suggest getting a year old dog from the animal shelter or rescue agency. Go meet and greet a few before you decide on a specific dog. A lot of times it's not the breed but the upbringing. Plus I think you'll probably end up with a nervous breakdown chasing around a puppy and caring for your newborn.

Your standard Mix dogs at the local Humane Society are great for kids. I would stress you get a dog that is not a puppy. Older dogs are easier to get along with. Take the baby with you and the right dog will find you. DO NOT GET A TERRIER if you just got a new baby. I love my rat terrier and my jack Russell but they can snap if a baby is bothering them...Plus they are so little you want something that can withstand the abuse of a kid wanting to play and ride..Good Luck

Probably your best bet would be a small dog. Get it as a puppy and let it bond with the new baby. Show the dog that it is OK to let other people hold and touch the baby. Congrats on your new baby. Good luck on the dog!!

Labs are the most friendly & loving & do get a puppy so it can grow up with your child. The shelter is the best place to go. Stay away from small dogs, they have that little dog syndrome which means they are more agressive. A lady told me that her small dog jumped a pitbull & the pit - who was fortunately brought up to be loving, stayed inside traumatized for 3 days! LOL

Provided you are thinking of a puppy and not an adult dog (which may get jealous of the baby) then a Golden Retriever would be a good choice.

I don´t know the name of this dogs in English, in Spanish they are called "Labrador" look for a picture...those are really protective and really lovely with everyone. Try to get one with short hear, if not they can get really dirty. Hope it works, and you can enjoy your new dog, and mostly, your new baby! Here you have a link with pictures of this dogs: http://www.euroresidentes.com/fotos/postales_mascotas/perros/labrador/

No dog is good when you have a new baby. Every dog will get jealous when they see or hear the new arrival, and they can be very dangerous when jealous. If you have one get rid of it. Please!!!!
