when i read it, it sounds to me like it is a prayer.
i've heard tho it's more of asking mary to talk to God. i've always believed that even after we go to heaven we will still be worshiping in heaven. and a part of worshiping God is prayer. am i right, if i'm half-right or wrong can you bring me up to speed?

Yes it is a prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. There are different forms of prayer. In prayer of petition or intercessory prayer, we ask the Saints to pray WITH us and we can ask Mary to pray with us. Since she is Jesus' mother she has some special clout.
Also the Hail Mary is used in the Rosary as a simple form of meditation to put one in a state of mind necessary for peace and meditative reflection on the life of Jesus.
My favorite is the Angelus which is said in the morning. It has 3 Hail Mary's in it along with other phrases that remind us of the Incarnation of Jesus. It is very beautiful and when done at the monastery we kneel and the bells are rung. It is done at dawn. We rejoice in the Word made flesh, and show respect to the woman who agreed to be his human mother.
I am a High Church Anglican.

"when i read it, it sounds to me like it is a prayer." - Yes - it is a prayer, a request for Mary - the Mother of Jesus (GOD) to ask GOD to bless us by answering our request. Very same mentality as a request to a human king. As Kings were something people are familiar with, but no so much anymore in 2006. Jesus is the King so people pray accordingly. Mary is the mother of the King.
I don't know from Kings or how to talk to them, so that's all I know. Americans have no daily training on dealing with royalty. We are in for a shock when in the presence of them. Royals are not millionaires or "celebrities" that we are used to.
The second part of your question: "I've always believed that even after we go to heaven we will still be worshiping in heaven. and a part of worshiping God is prayer" - this also correct - we will worship GOD in heaven, and do as instructed, rotate down to be guardian angels, or whatever else GOD needs.

Yes it is a prayer.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. (Lk. 1:28)
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. (Lk. 1:42)
Pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death, Amen.
Here we ask Mary to intercede for us.
Protestants have a hard time with this, but then they turn around and ask their friend to pray for them.
We are asking Mary, who is much closer to God than just an average person, to pray for us. Don't you think he'll listen to her even more than he will listen to your friend?
I have no idea why Protestants have a problem with this prayer!

Sams said it best - the first part if from Luke and teh rest the Catholic church added to conclude the prayer. God chose Mary to raise His Son - what a wonderful gift of giving back to God then by loving Her -- after all -- she was the bearer of the greatest Gift we could ever receive -showing her respect and love is agreeing with God saying -- right on, you did the right thing :)

The angel Gabriel did appear to Mary and told her that she was to be the earth mother of a child of promise. The first part of the prayer is that. The forgiveness of sin part was added by the church.

It is a prayer, that requests that Mary "intervene" with God on the behalf of the person that recites a Hail Mary/ rosary. Most will explain that it is not actualy worship of Mary, but veneration.
