You can make vodka out of pretty much anything, but the most common are potatoes and wheat. Vodka is a clear spirit, and is generally 80 proof (that is 40% alcohol). Ideally, it is tasteless and colorless, however you will taste the alcohol. The purer vodka the better. It can be served chilled on its own, over ice, or as part of a drink, most commonly with tonic or fruit juices. It is the most popular spirit on the market, with Chopin, Belvedere, Finlandia, Grey Goose on the high quality end and Popov, Smirnoff on the lower end.
Whiskey is an amber colored spirit, made of grain. Most commonly, it is made of corn or rye. It is usually aged in wood barrels for a eriod of time ranging from 6 months to 25 years, (sometimes longer!!) It is flavorful; it has a grainy, woody taste. Whiskey is usually between 70-80 proof though some is more. There are three major types of whisky: Blended, scotch, Bourbon. Blended is made usually in US, Canada or Ireland. Scotch is made in Scotland. Bourbon is a corn whiskey that is made exclusively in Kentucky. Generally, the longer the whiskey has aged, the better it tastes. Trivia fact: when aging the whiskey, the amount that evaporates through the pores of the wood barrel is referred to as "the angels share"
More Trivia: The county in which the Jack Daniels Distillery (Linchburg TN) in a dry county, ergo, no tasting room.
Whiskey can be enjoyed neat (poured straight out of the bottle into a glass), over ice, with water, with soda, or as a drink (i.e a whiskey sour, Jack and coke etc)
Whiskey on the higher end (including scotch) is Johnny Walker Blue, Green or Gold, Makers Mark, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Chivas Regal.
Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Canadian Club are also good
Low end whiskeys include:
Ten High, Black Velvet, Cutty Sark
Assuming you are 21, the best thing for you to do is go to a bar and ask for a chilled Grey Goose.
Another day, go to a bar and ask for a Johnny Blue, neat.
Two very good spirits. You will enjoy them!

Vodka is simply neutral spirit that's around 40% alcohol by volume (ABV). If you look at any vodka bottle, you'll see that the majority is distilled from grain. From Smirnoff and Popov to Gray Goose...seriously, read the bottles. There are a few that are made from other ingredients like Ciroc (from grapes) and Blue Ice (potatoes). What makes it "neutral" is that regardless of the base ingredients, it's distilled multiple times or with precision using a reflux column (the equivalent of multiple times). Then it's filtered through activated carbon to remove any of the remaining funky flavors.
Whisk(e)y, on the other hand (the Scots spell it without the 'e'), is not a neutral spirit that's usually only distilled twice (or a more simple style of reflux column) and then put in to wooden casks to age. Whiskey is only made from grains (no potatoes, grapes, or sugar) and is brown from the cask aging (plus caramel color for the cheap brands). There are dozens of types of whiskey...corn, malt, rye, Bourbon, Scotch, single malt, blended, vatted, American, Canadian, Japanese, etc. each with its own combination of grains, brewing, distilling, aging, location and whatnot.
