Update: this looks promising:

First of all, all dating sites are pretty much free to post your profile and do a very limited browse or search. You dont' get to use the site very much before it asks you to register for a large monthly fee (ranging from 10-40 dollars). This fee is for-in my informed opinion-very very little service. Imagine paying for myspace. No really, sit there and imagine that. Would that not make you a little tad upset, as ridiculous, ugly difficult to use as it is? The only thing these sites have going for them is number of users. They don't care about you or things would be different. I care about you though :)
I have looked and looked and not found a GOOD free dating site. That is a big problem. How to define a GOOD site. I think it has to offer more than just pictures and a profile (match.com). More than matching 2 rows in a database. I think it needs to be more flexible than a bunch of questionaires and tests and a rigid process that frequently plagued by user abandonment (eharmony). I believe it needs to cost a LOT less than adultfriendfinder (anything in the friendfinder galaxy, that is quite large by now). Also, a dating site RELIES on large numbers of users to work. Just like any social sites- myspace or AOL or any site whose core competency is connecting people. Finally, a dating site should work the way YOU want it to- it should be flexible enough to accommodate most if not all of your people-matching preferences (dating, sex, friends). I don't think you should have to join 4+ different social networking sites for different ways of interacting with people (or 2 max makes sense: friends/colleagues and intimates).
None of them do it all- that is none are cheap or free, have questionaires/fun games/collaboration/interaction, rich media that's done RIGHT, a clean easy interface. Adultfriendfinder stratified into a bunch of little microniches like Italian dater, Jewish dater, which may be fine, but it could have been done within the interface of adultfriendfinder to be fair. But instead, they are obviously out to make a ton of money and offer less and less in the way of service by stratifying their user base. Great job guys! They are encouraging within-race or type dating by doing this. It would have been more interesting if they could have included in friendfinder a means for users to prioritize or elevate users of a certain race anonymously, so that a person would not have to join and PAY for both the race-specific site and the main, general site. I dont' think the general site is for white people but doesn't say 'for white people' I think it really is a general 'American' mixed bag.
I am a web developer and I'm in the process of making an all-inclusive but use-how-you-want dating site (no 'jewish dater' - that is re-tarded. which means first time around it was just 'tarded'). The whole friend-finder family is going to see some competition. They have charged people a lot for a long time. Ehamony sucks. I spent a year on it and didn't go out with any of the overweight single-parent-schoolteachers that it was matching for me. I see that commercial and wanna pop that happy schmuck right on his nose for taking my money.
So to answer your question, there are no good free dating sites YET. There will be soon, and it will be ad-based to start and it will tie into another service to make money to support it. The odds are against me in getting enough pepole to use the site. That is the hard part. Anyway beyond ads, subscription services for a killer app, but it won't break or be nerfed to unusability like match.com (which sucks) or you can browse a page then you have to pay like adultfriendfinder and so many others.
Meantime I'll keep looking to try to answer your question and if i find anything while i'm developing and/or when i'm done i'll msg you.
sorry for the long answer. hope u enjoyed it.

My fiancee and I met on there; and I met two of my closest friends through the site as well. It's not like a typical 'match' site. It's personality tests are witty and spot-on.
