if iraq was to have a referendom with the simple question do you want the coalition troops to stay or go, surely this would get everyone out of a tricky situation if the answer was stay it could be said we are here because the majority of people want us here and if they said go they could leave because thats what the people want and they must take the consequences

Regardless of when the troops are withdrawn, there will probably be a Civil War. The present government that came into power with US help and backing realize this, hence they want the US to remain to secure their hold. The nation will probably end up with a strongman style dictatorship, like Saddam's but will be friendly to the US, at first anyway. However,I do not believe, the US is in there for oil, and definately not to win the "Hearts & Minds" of the Iraqies. They are mainly concerned about the 14 military bases being built, which will put the US & her client state, Israel within striking distance of all Arab & Persian territory. Although, I think your suggestion about letting the Iraqi people decide will fall on very deaf ears. If there was honesty involved about the war, I would think your idea would be the best way to let go of the tiger's tail...BUT??????????

I guess don't really understand your point.

First off, why should the fate of our troops be at the whim and control of people in a foreign country? I'm going to try to say this nicely but quite frankly I'm appalled, disgusted and discouraged that you see things that way or would think anyone might possibly agree. If I was a Republican (which I'm not) I would say "why do you hate our troops?"

If it was right to go in there then it's right to stay. If you're saying the Iraqis should vote to decide whether to tell us to leave, that tells me there is a reasonable doubt as to whether we should have gone in in the first place.

So, no that's not a solution. It's not even a good idea.

I agree that power must be transfered to the Iraqi's as soon as possible, but we must take into consideration the power of the insurgency and the stability of the government. Now I'm no government official so I cannot tell you which is stronger, but if the insurgency has a hope of overthrowing the government once we leave, then we should stay, to keep it from becoming a hotspot for terrorists. If the Iraqi government is stronger, then yes, we should leave it to them to deal with

The Government of Iraq has said time and time again that they want us to stay. In fact they are begging us to stay. I am hoping that some intelligence is still around in regards to Iraq. Most Iraqi's know that the majority of Insurgents are out of Iran. There are many steps that need to happen in Iraq and for the sake of peace in the region, I hope we make the right decisions. I certainly don't want to have to go back in.

So you have not been following the news over the past couple of years.

The Iraqis have had two elections and one referendum already. And apparently they want us to stay until they can defend themselves.

most but not all of the iraqis are happy for what we have done. they want peace in their country and know we are the best people to give it to them. in areas in some of the kurdish lands we dont have any soldiers or very few.
