Only if you tell it that it is a dog. Both mine do, because I call them dogs.

Try calling them a cat and watch the sparks fly.

In a way, yes it does. It has an image of what a dog 'should' look like in its mind and anything that doesn't fit that image is 'not a dog'. Its called 'imprinting'. All animals do it, even humans. Its something we learn as tiny babies.
Some dogs refuse to accept odd looking dogs as dogs; until they've had a chance to smell them.
They also know that a cat has 4 legs and a tail but is not a dog.
When a dog can see itself in a mirror, it reacts as though it is looking at another dog. If you sit beside it a smart dog can figure out its looking at a reflection of itself.

Dogs raised without the company of other dogs don't have this imprinted image and don't like to be around other dogs. It takes a lot of patient training to teach them how to behave around other dogs.

Yes it does, and it hasn't the ability to think too deeply about other being's either, so it actually think's we're dog's that walk on two leg's! But through experience it learns that the two legged dog's generally are the one's in charge (if you're bringing it up right!), and that the four legged hairy one's, are the one's he "should" be romping, biting and jumping all over.

Depends how you treat them. If you mean do they know that they are a dog I find that because I am so close with my dog I think she hardly knows the difference. If you allow them to sleep in bed and treat them like a person it almost seems like they do not know that they are in fact a dog.

First of all, you need to learn some gramatical skills, and yes a dog obviously knows it is a dog because of its phychology. it will mate with another dog (female; the *****), not a cat, lion etc. (unless it is under hybrid experimentations). animals do not have the ability to understand intellectual concepts like humans and therefore adhere to their parents behaviour, the only ones to guide them. they do what theyre parents do and if they don't have parents, they will do what they are told by humans not other animals.

Dogs do not have the privilage of the power of thinking - If they are capable of thinking they would be the masters and we would be the dogs!!!
