Yes, but be carefull, as the red is likely to become very vivid (bright red, not chestnutty red).
When you say red, do you mean pillarbox red, or chestnut ? Maybe take a test strand and do that first ( remove a small lock from under the back of your hairline where is won't show if possible). It's really gonna be embarrasing for you if you want chestnut and you get pillarbox.
I used to dye mine bright orange... like fruit orange, and I used loreal bleaches (ash blonde ?) and then loreal 'Rouge Recital' chestnut red... which always came out the perfect mental orange I wanted. . . . I suspect you dont want that ?

It is not safe to do anything else to your hair, but a most effective way to do red now is a red rinse depending on your color. If it platinum white or blonde use red, if it is blonde just a burgundy until to get the red you want. remember to conditioner your hair, and rinse only 2 weeks apart.

Just buy a decent brand of hair-colour, go for darker red (chestnut or mahogany) because the red shows very intensive on light hair

Good luck. I tried that once and it came out orange. You need a few bottles of dark red dye and even then, when it washes out a little bit it'll be orange.
If it's something you really want I suggest a salon... don't do this at home.

Go to a salon, it will involve a pre-pigmenting then a colour over the top, but you'll likely need at least a couple of treatments before it'll stick.
