How many hours a day does a cat sleep?

As all the felidae, the cat is a heavy sleeper. As an average, it usually sleeps 16 hours a day, divided in several different periods. A cat is generally more active at sunrise and at sunset. The seasons also have a great influence on its sleeping cycles: it is more active in summer than in winter

Its level of activity depends mainly on its environment. An outdoor cat is much more watchful and alert than an indoor cat. Outside, the cat sleeps “ with one eye open ” and even a light noise gets it awake. On the contrary, a cat that never goes out has a tendency to sleep longer and deeper.

Adult cats sleep on average about 16 hours a day. This is because they are conserving energy. Genetically, cats are hunters. In the wild, a cat would use an enormous amount of energy hunting prey for food, and so to build up that energy, they sleep for several hours a day. You can see this in larger cats, like lions, tigers, etc. Kittens need more sleep than adult cats because the only time their growth hormone is released is during sleep.

Also, cats are carnivores, and an only-meat diet makes you sleepy. ;)

Some people say that cats sleep an upwards of 20 hours a day. They need enough sleep to keep them going, I guess. If you cat is lethargic all the time, then take him/her to the vet just in case.

Cats sleep a lot for sure. And they don't sleep at 7 or 8 hours a stretch as people like to do. That's why the term "cat nap" was coined.

I know I could get a lot more sleep if I didn't have to prepare their food, fill their water dishes, wash up the dishes after they eat, empty their litterboxes etc. They really do have it made don't they?

I think my 13 week old kitten should have about 23 hours a day. He doesn't agree with that estimate , and has the odd ten minutes whenever he is completely exhausted after rampaging about the house in full 'destruct' mode.
Hope this helps?
