SSI and Social Security Disability (SSD) are two different things. SSI is different from State to State. Some states automatically give you Medicaid when you apply for SSI, some states don't. Who turned you down for medical insurance? Why did they turn you down? Did you apply for Medicaid or your states version of medicaid?

If you have SSD, you will get medicare after you have been on SSD for 24 months. The 24 months starts from the month of your application, not from the date they approved you on. Medicare part D does pay for prescription medicines, but you can't get Medicare part D unless you have Medicare. You can't get Medicare unless you have been on SSD for 24 months OR you are 65.

It sounds like you need to find out why they turned you down for medical coverage, and then address those issues. The Medicaid office in my state will deny people for the most trivial of reasons. If you are on SSI you have prooven that you have a VERY limited income and resources, so you obviously can't afford to buy a plan and you can't afford to pay the medical bills. Get more detail on your denial and fight it. Call a lawyer if you need to, many areas have low cost or no cost lawyers to help people with this kind of thing.

I am also on SSI. You have to be on SSI for I believe 1 year before you are eligible for Medicare. It is not free either. I believe I pay close to $80 a month for Medicare coverage, plus the monthly cost of your Prescription program, which the prices varies according to plan. Mine is $30 a month You should qualify for Medicaid or at least for the spend down program through them. With the spend down program you have to pay X amount towards your medical care until the pick up the rest.

On SSI, you should be eligible for medicare or medicaid, I don't understand why you wouldn't be.
