I'm probably not the best person to answer this question.
I think it's okay to be in love, and still move on. You can't make the other person love you, and you won't be able to have a fully productive life, by always looking over your shoulder.
I would suggest you fill your time with productive activities and remove any reminders of this individual. You may not have to destroy them, but you may have to put them away for some time.
And...if you are sure it is over...try not to initiate any further contact.

i'm in your position. i've been eating alot of cookie cake and brownie fudge...and i've been talking to friends and my mother about it. i think the best think to do at first is to let yourself feel the pain of what happened as opposed to denying it...it'll speed things up. Talk to people you're close too and just get it all out and hope maybe you'll reach some new conclusions about what happened (maybe you'll come to see he was a jerk after all..) Also during this time make sure you steer clear of this guy..you need a vacation from him..so that you don't fallen under the trap of falling for him all over again and being even more hurt about the fact that he's gone. Then after the misery part you need to go out with friends...that doesn't mean get back in the playing field just yet (because you'll compare the new guy to him) it just mean you need to have fun and realize that there more to your life. Durning this time try to pick up a book as well, or a paint brush or whatever your hobby is...it'll be good to put these heavy feelings away from time to time. but overall I guess the real answer to getting over someone though...is and always will be time. once time comes he'll be a good memory and you'll be able to move forward with your love life...only you know when that time is though. :)

Go out with your friends, staying at home thinking about him wont help. Try to meet new guys and just keep him off your mind and before you know it, youll be over him.
I know its going to be hard, but just try.
