British to quit Iraq ‘in a year’
Michael Smith and Sarah Baxter

THE Democrats’ clean sweep in last week’s American congressional elections has prepared the way for a British exit from Iraq, with troop numbers more than halved by next spring.

A staged withdrawal of all 7,500 British troops now in southern Iraq could come by the end of next year, defence sources said.

Military commanders have made no secret of their wish to get out of Iraq, with senior sources critical of the decision to maintain such a large garrison.

Tony Blair is expected to urge America to open talks with Iran, Syria and other regional powers when he speaks to the Iraq Study Group, co-chaired by James Baker, the former US secretary of state, by video link on Tuesday.

This war came to a climax last month. With the change of power in the elections and Tony Blair's resignation, the support for the President and the war has fizzled. In Britain, the people have been opposed to the effort since its inception which lead to low troop commitment. They are not worried about "perception of being weak" as America is. The only thing left for America is to figure a way out without looking too bad.

Nothing will happen to the war in Iraq. If the Brits leave, they can expect an expansion of domestic terrorism that they have already experienced. I was in London last summer during the bombings, it was not pretty. Yet, if Britain pulls out of Iraq, it is a clear sign to the terrorists that all they have to do is make things difficult and nations will pull back... they achieve the isolationist status they hope, and the terrorists can expand their attacks at will. Fight them now, fight them hard, and destroy them in Iraq, Iran, North Korea and elsewhere, or you will be afraid to step outside your house.

just like Germany, Japan, Korea, Panama, Kosovo, Bosnia, Hondures; America will not leave for at least 50 years. Nothing has happened in Germany or Japan in 60 years and there is still troops there.
