Whever I learn new things but not apply them constantly, I completely forget them! It's like I never learnt them in the first place! To be able to retain new information or skills.. you got to start applying them as soon as you've acquired it.

Some knowledge is theoretic eminently meaning that you can hardly apply it practically. For example, philosophy. You can study and learn about Idealism or positivism, for example, but applying the knowledge will be difficult or need time and extended observations. On the other hand you can learn some eminently applicable knowledge. For example, engineering. You learn how to make a bridge in theory but your knowledge will be complete when you are able to build the actual bridge.
You can also learn by doing. Some knowledge is only practical. For example, being a parent or a wife. Even though you read a book about it, it will be really hard to apply it to real life.
As a person you need all of them.
In short, you need both. Your knowledge is acquired by theory and practice, and every time you apply it or act, its feedback increase your knowledge.

By applying the knowledge that you have already learned, your will automatically increase your knowledge base because you will be teaching yourself how to problem solve. You will always learn something new everyday, and the challenge is to recognize that it is new and apply that knowledge to your everyday life so you can build from it. Both are important in our lives.

Increasing you knowledge is eminent… You will be adding to your knowledge base as you grow and live. Applying what you’ve already learned is called “wisdom”. You must use this to continue onward, to your path of old age.

Watch out for these long winded answers, some people think they are Psychologists & Philosophers, and some think they are both!

It’s really quite simple if you think about it…

These are not opposites that present an either/or situation. By applying what you learned you will increase your knowledge by having better insight. As a teacher this is exactly what happened when I took my first job. there is an old saying that goes: "There is no teacher like experience"

Both. You can increase your knowledge while applying what you already know.

~~~I strongly believe we all learn something new everyday, whether from work, school, or just something we experienced through out our day,,,,,,And if we choose to apply the knowledge we do have,,,I feel it should be given with discretion,,,no one really wants to learn something new from a "know it all" ,,,I try to share what I know by being humble,,,and mabey saying "you know what I have found works for me,,,you can try it if you like" that way I dont sound like I know everything,,,,,,
