I don't think all friendly mother-in-laws despise their daughter-in-laws a little. I say this because I have one that treats me as if i'm her blood daughter. When she met me I had 4 children that were in D.C.F.S. custody, I was very wild and I was only 21 years old I didn't know how to be a mother because I never had a mother or anyone to be a mother figure in my life. She helped me out more than anyone in my family ever has. She accepted me and my children as her own. I got my children back, and I learned how to become the mother my children need.

I suppose if they're insecure and controlling. I have the best mother-in-law; she is loving, supportive and the best friend I could have asked for. When my son brings home a wife, I hope to be the same for my daughter-in-law.

Yes almost every mother in some ways does. B/c that is her son and nobody is good enough for him. Just remember to stay on her good side. And give her a very little leeway. B/c in the long run she won't be around forever.

Of course not. They may find it difficult to realize that there is another person that could take just as good care of their son as they have. A possessive mother may become jealous but most realize they have to let go at some point.

I dearly love both of my daughters-in-law. My sons each picked the perfect mate for themselves. Now I can rest knowing someone else is making sure they are "good boys"!! Now I just hope my daughter finds the right guy! LOL

Perhaps despise isn't the word for those in the 'best' class but even they have some competitive jealousy which they are usually able to suppress..

I think that despise is a bit strong. It is when we see our sons being treated less than they should be that we have a problem with.talk to her there are two sides to every story

They can start out being friendly as long as they think you're just like them in some way. As long as you keep them thinking you agree with everything they say and do they will like you. As soon as you get tired of playing the game and have some personality of your own they resent this and the bubble is burst.

I believe that is probably a true statement. All mothers think that their children are the best and that no one is good enough for them. Therefore it leads to a jealousy type thing.

Well, sure - I imagine there is a degree of resentment there, no matter what.
Nothing like a sons' girl to bring any latent cattiness to the surface, really.....
