A duvet is a type of bedding— a soft flat bag traditionally filled with down or feathers, or a combination of both and used on a bed as a blanket. Duvets originally came out of rural Europe and were made from the down feathers of the Eider duck, which is well known for its usefulness as an insulator.

Eiderdown is therefore used as a synonym of duvet, as is continental quilt.

In Westphalia, an English travel-writer observed with surprise in 1749,

"There is one thing very particular to them, that they do not cover themselves with bed-cloaths, but lay one feather-bed over, and another under. This is comfortable enough in winter, but how they can bear their feather-beds over them in summer, as is generally practised, I cannot conceive." —Thomas Nugent, The Grand Tour 1749, vol II. p66
Duvets are still commonly used in Europe (especially in northern Europe and Scandinavia where it is the most common form of bed covering), and have become popular throughout the world in the late twentieth century.

Duvets reduce the complexity of making a bed, as it is a single cover instead of the combination of two sheets, blankets, and quilts or other bed covers, which is traditional in many parts of the world. Ralli quilt is a kind of duvet which is traditionally used in the Indian subcontinent as the bedsheet and blanket. Beds equipped with duvets are usually covered first with a flat or fitted bed sheet and then afterwards with a covered duvet. The cover is called a "duvet cover" or a "quilt cover".

Nowadays, a duvet is sometimes filled with wool or artificial fibers (such as polyester batting or other artificial material). It is also sometimes referred to as a comforter, although comforters are primarily decorative while duvets are used for their warmth.

In Australia it is called a "Doona", from a trademarked brand name derived from the Old Norse dunn meaning "down feathers". Though still registered to the Tontine company, the name "Doona" has become a generic term for a duvet or down quilt. Originally the term continental quilt was the standard name used across Australia; some regions of Australia still use this term today.

In Danish and Norwegian it is called a dyne, which is pronounced similarly to the Australian name.

The 3 latest replies remind me of a conversation I had while visiting Myrtle Beach. Duvet is French for "down" in regards to the feathers of a bird, it is the bag filled with down or feathers, depending on price paid for a duvet. Usually a cover is put over the "duvet" to facilitate cleaning and compliments the decor at the same time. Since a "duvet" would usually require dry cleaning, it is more reasonable to remove the cover for washing than send the whole duvet to the cleaners. As far as summer or winter use, great in both extremes. This is something you should shake to loosen the down, much as a dog does when going outside or coming in, acts as in insulation against cold and hot. Living in Canada, we use ours 24/7. You can now find duvets with down treated against allergies and with a 300 or more count exterior, not much dust penetrates and if you have a 300 or more count cover for the duvet, even better.

It's a polyester fiberfill or down filled comforter with a removable, typically washable cover. They also sell duvet covers so you can change the style of your bedding without having to buy another duvet filler.

A duvet is a cover for your comforter. It keeps your comforter clean, you only have to wash the duvet.

A duvet is like a giant pillow case for a fluffy comfortor, like one made of down. Usually down comfortors are white, like a pillow, therefore it needs to be covered.
