Landfills take forever to break down into reusable land. We make more garbage and damage the world.
Reduce--if you don't need it, don't buy it. Second hand items, recovering existing ones. Hand-me-downs good ways to reduce.
Reuse--if you can reuse grocery bags or rewire a lamp.
Recycle--if it can be recycled don't throw it in main trash. Paper, plastic aluminum cans etc.

Every dustbin full of waste ends up in landfill sites. In the UK we dont have a lot of free land to use for this purpose as it cannot be built on! Part of this waste decays producing methane gas which finds its way to the surface. The rest (Plastics, etc) remains behind as it doesn't degrade.
Re-cycle as much as possible instead. We would then use less of the natural resources we currently do use to make new. i.e Trees are used to make paper!
Most garden waste is suitable for making compost and a lot of kitchen waste is too!
Things like paper, cardboard, glass and tin cans even old clothing can be recycled!
Buy recycled products. Use plastic carrier bags again even if only for putting rubbish in. Instead of buying food bags use re-usable containers for storage. Where possible buy bio-degradable products.

Most (not all) waste ends up in landfills. Waste can also be incinerated. Space is an issue though. Although landfills are becoming more stable and the methane is being collected, it still would be unwise to build any major structure on one. Obviously not all waste can be recycled, but everything you can should be to save room in the landfills. To reduce waste you can recycle or reuse. Buy items that have been recycled, and if it is an option buy items that are recyclable.

Start before recycling! Consumers should be demanding that supermarkets reduce the amount of useless packaging that they impose on the public at every visit-or give it back to them at the checkout and make them responsible for disposing of it!

in the real world it is profitable to get the most use of materials due to cost and efficiency
i could give an answer based on ecology and future resources but if those were the defining traits of the 'real world' we would all be walking instead of driving

We are consuming the resources of this planet far faster than they can be renewed.
What does that tell you?
