The years do not vary, the steps between elementary, junior high/middle school, and high school do vary.
It's usually like this: Kindergarten, 1-5, 6-8, 9-12
there are 2 year colleges 4 year colleges and universities and graduate level for work beyond a 4 year degree.

It depends on the counties. The school I went to had K through 6 in elementary (7 years), grades 7 & 8 in middle (2 years), and 9 through 12 in high school (4 years); for a total of 13 years. Some counties put the 6 graders in the middle school instead of elementary. Time at a University is usually 4 years, but can vary due to the degree. An Associates degree is usually only 2 years instead of 4. A doctor or lawyer would attend school for more than 4 years.

Elementary school is typically 6 years (kindergarten through 5th).
Secondary/Junior High/Middle School is typically 3 years.
High school is typically 4 years.
For some schools, 6th grade will be included in elementary school and 9th grade in middle school.
College is typically four years, although people who fulfill all the requirements for their intended major early can graduate early. Some people who change majors a lot or as a junior or senior can spend more than 4 years in college. Many other people spend more time in college pursuing advanced degrees. My psychology instructor has been in college for more than 20 years pursuing multiple degrees, masters and PhDs.

When I was in school, elementary school was 6 years, Kindergarten through 5th grade, High school was 6th grade through 12th grade, 7 years. You can go to college as long as you want. Many people go between 2 and 8 years.

elementary schools, secondary(middle) schools, and high schools are divided differently according to their school district. usuall an elementary is K (kindergarten),1,2,3,4,and 5th grade, sometimes 6th grade also. then (some middle schools start at 6th grade) and 7th 8th and 9th grade, but the ones that usually start at 6th end at 8th. high school covers wherever middle school left off 9th or 10th grade-12th. that's a total of 13 years in public schools. universities are anywhere from2 yrs (associates' degree) to 4yrs (bachelors') to 6yrs (masters') but if going for a doctorate (or if you have enough tuition$$) you can attend endlessly
