That is funny, they do that don't they. I am not a cat person but I do have a rent a cat outside and when he/she is going to pounce on something he/she does that. Maybe it gets the spring wound up tight so the spring really lets go and off in the air they go.

I agree with nuno. You will see athletes do this before starting a sprint, returning a fast serve, or preparing for a high jump. It warms up the muscles to prepare them for the leap.
Sometimes I don't think we appreciate the extraordinary athletic ability of our house cats. People get so upset with cats jumping on counters - I am always amazed that they can lift their bodies up so swiftly and surely to such a remarkable height.

cats back legs are like springs.....when they are about to pounce the wiggle they do is actually like coiling up a spring. when they pounce the spring in the muscles is released.
its how a cat can jump high or leap far yet never have to have a running start.

I think she is setting her rear feet into a springing position so she can make a flying pounce. Any cat I've ever had, and I've had many, does that. It looks cute.

I don't know definitively, but I've thought it was to test their balance. If they don't have sufficient balance then they'll likely fall instead of successfully pouncing.
