You will get what you pay for, so cheap might not be the way to go. Someone selling puppies for $100-$200....tells me they've put nothing into the breeding pair and obviously nothing into the care of the puppies!

Check with your local animal welfare, there are plenty of small, medium and large breed dogs & puppies that need a home.

Don't buy from someone at a flea market or out in front of your local grocery store. You just promote backyard breeding.

Adopt one from your local shelter. Depending on where you live, adoption fees range from about $45.00 - $90.00.

When you're looking to add a pet to your life, consider adopting a homeless animal from your local shelter. Whether you want a puppy or a more mature dog, a purebred or a one-of-a-kind mixed breed, even a rabbit or hamster, your shelter has the best selection of animals anywhere. All screened for good health and behavior. Most shelters will even help you with spaying and neutering (or the animal might already be neutered/spayed with all vaccines).

The animal shelter is your top source for a new pet, and our pet-care experts have compiled all the information you'll need to find your nearest shelter, select a pet who matches your lifestyle, and more.

Every day in the United States thousands upon thousands of puppies and kittens are born because of the uncontrolled breeding of pets. Add to that number the offspring of stray and abandoned companion animals, and the total becomes even more staggering. Every year, between six and eight million dogs and cats enter U.S. shelters; some three to four million of these animals are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them.

Animal shelters or breed specific rescue organizations (that way you're sure to get a small one).

I don't know you're background or situation, but I'm assuming that you don't have dogs since you don't know how to find one. If you haven't had a dog before, don't get a puppy, get an adult. You might not think they're as cute, but they're not as much trouble, and believe me, puppies are tons of trouble. So, I say go to an animal shelter or pound and pick a fully grown small dog.

Small breed puppies are not going to be cheap. You might be able to find an adult at a shelter for a reasonable price.

Look in your area newspapers for free mixed breed puppies or go to your local animal shelter. You can usually get poodles and chiuahahus cheap; if you are lucky you may stumble upon an adult yorkie (don't know of any cheap yorkies) or a Pug; Pomerianian, Bischon, Maltese, etc.

I would say avoid pet stores. They are expensive and could have puppy mill pups. Go to animal shelters or the pound, save a pup and you won't have to pay for much. Do a search on yahoo for your closest ones.

Do some research into the dog breeds you might be interested in. Figure out what you are looking for in a dog, and then contact
rescue for that particular breed. Save a Dog, check out Rescue!
