In Rocky, apparently none of the possible opponents were willing to fight Apollo Creed with five weeks notice, even if it was a shot at the heavyweight championship. Do you think this would be true in real life today?

Of the current contenders as ranked by Ring Magazine, I think John Ruiz would be the most likely to take such a shot. The other contenders--assuming the fight is five months from now--had fought recently, many of them losing, and therefore wouldn't be interested.

Ruiz hasn't fought in about a year and would probably want a rematch with WBA beltholder Nicolay Valuev. I think he would also take a shot against WBO beltholder Shannon Briggs, who looks the least impressive of the current beltholders.

Another fighter who would take the shot would be Samuel Peter, who likely feels that his performance against IBF beltholder Wladimir Klitschko was good enough even though it didn't get him a win.

In my opinion, it has a lot to do with which "Champion" would be offering the shot. Wlad and Briggs seem to be the biggest threats out there. If it were Valuev that were offering his title, I believe the list would be long of fighters who take up the challenge. Oleg, is somewhat questionable but there would be quite a few takers for his belt also.
Unlike Rocky, there is no clear cut Heavyweight Champion of the World, unfortunately that's only in the movies now, but given the state of the Heavyweight division now who knows what can or can't happen. So the answer to your question is "Sure" any heavyweight with a punch could beat Valuev and any heavyweight who can set a quick pace can beat Oleg and there are a lot of Heavies out there that fit that bill and heck, were talking about the Heavyweight title, five weeks training wouldn't be a problem. Heck, James Toney looks like he only trained for five weeks before all of his heavyweight fights.

i think that would completely depend in what they really do want and if the case that what they want is to win , then it would depend in how well do they feel and whether or not they think the opponent is better trained that them . it would pretty much be a matter of luck .

when a person starts on a gym the usual first question is : what is it that u want . then they do explain how is it that all train different and have different results depending in what they do . so why is this relevant ??? this is relevant because even when a person may look very strong that person may be over training trying to get even stronger , so if that person was a boxer then he would be very tired and would not be capable of making a good fightt .

there is also many boxers ( if not most ) that after a good figh hit the buffet as fast as they done and take a break from their training trying to recovert from the fight and the training . most of this boxers would obviously not be ready if were called out by any good contender . it would also be very unlikely for them to risk losing their career and maybe more if they know they that they are not ready .

there is also another kind which know that they are actually not that good and would likely take any fight just because of the money ( i think u once said u would go into the ring with Tyson for five seconds :-P just for the money ) . so i think that there would be more than one who would do it depending on how much money they would get just to be a punshing bag .

note 1 : in my opinion there is nobody right now who could be compared to Apollo , maybe there was in the past . two people who could be compare to him could be Tyson and Mohamed ally since they been the two who were the most dominant but then again Tyson proves what i said about fighting with out being ready ( he is now retired because he lost ) .

note 2 : however there was a person whose history could actually be compared to that of Apollo's . the only difference is that nobody wanted to fight this person , not because they thought he was the greatest but because they thought he wasn't worth fighting or that he did not deserve it . his name was Jack Johnson who latter become the first black heavyweight world champion and retained his title from 1908 to 1915 with out losing a single time .

I believe boxers like Hasim Rahman, James Toney John Ruiz and even young Sam Peter would jump at the chance. Some of the others would require a longer notice to properly train and be 100 percent but I think with the heavyweight division like it is now most would accept the fight.

At the lighter weights, several fighters have taken fights on short notice because the other fighter bowed out.
