Go on line and get tickets for anything you are planning in advance of the trip. If you are seeing a play - go to that theater box office on line and get better seats for a better price. Empire State - essential to go on line in advance as cuts wait in line by up to 2 hours. Same for Statue of Liberty. For hotel go to one of those booking sites and find the hotel you want - then go to that hotel's web site and book the room. Usually comes out 30 to 40 dollars a night cheaper than " those " sites and your reservation is guaranteed. Sites will give you a guarantee, but the hotel does not honor site bookings and you may arrive to no room. Yes it has happened to people I know. "priceline" and those "sites" often are just money grubbing middlemen as you have to pay them and the hotel and the theater and the sites you have to have tickets for. The "sites" booking for you are never a bargain. Get your airline ticket from the airline and save the high high site markup on discount seats. We always shop 5th Avenue with the savings and spend apend spend. Last 4 day trip we spent over $6,000 shopping and saw a play and the sites and ate our way through the #1 on each resturant list. Have fun - you are going to the very best city on this (or any other) planet. I love NY

A week is enough time. Hit a Broadway show. You can get have priced seats at Tickets the day of. Hit Arthur Ave and Mott street for dinner. Use the Zaggot guide for restaurants. When something gets a high food rating in the city it has earned it. Do not worry about crime it is a safe city. The police will help you with directions. The Museums as I am sure you know are fantastic, Momo and the Guggenheim are great. Natural History is fun. Go see a Knick or Ranger game at Madison Square Garden. The worlds most famous Arena. If you want a moment go to ground zero and remember how the city has bounced back. There are some great department stores if that is your thing. Spending money will not be a problem . It flows. Empire, Statue, Ice Rink not really what the city is about. Skip those. Do not , I repeat do not rent a car or drive. Cabs or figure out the subway. Have a great time.

Hey Joanna,

I worked in NYC for almost 20 years. I moved around three and half years ago and return regularly to visit....I love it! First of all it depends what you like to do but some things you want to take advantage of are the museums like the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and the Guggenheim (Great Modern ART) are both on Fifth Avenue. When you can walk or take a bus SOUTH along Central Park toward Rockefeller Center. If the weather is nice you can walk it will take some time but it is a nice walk.

Try to see a Broadway show, even though I grew up in the area I still go back to see the shows. WICKED is a great show! I think it is still playing. Tickets are kind of pricey but worth the splurge!

Head toward Grand Central (42nd Street and Vanderbilt) and take the Downtown #4,5,or 6 (green line) subway train to Union Square. Cool area to explore! Go back to the subway station at Union Square and take the N or the R South (yellow line) to West Broadway. Walk toward Houston and go into SOHO...lots of fun!!!

Don't be afraid to ask people for help! New Yorkers are always on a mission but if you ask -- someone will help you. Good people to ask: concierge in your hotel, police, bus drivers, and business people walking on the streets.

HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!

If your surroundings seem to be getting seedier as blocks go by, turn around. And get a 7 day metrocard pass. It will save you $$$. Oh and, don't ask for directions from people off the street, you will then be heading straight for Harlem.
