here's the thing. If I had liked the guy and he came up to me and said he liked me my reaction would definitely be "Really?" with a surprise look on my face and a bright smile. Was she smiling? Good luck!

It's a non-committal answer that's better than "that's nice" but not as good as "I like you too." More important is what you said in response to her really.
It's a common expression in many women. With time you learn the proper response depending on the woman.

It could just be a reaction of surprise - neither confirming or denying whether she likes or dislikes... I'd lean towards like but there's no way to be certain.

it depends what did her face look like and did she smile and how did she act towards the rest of the day did she try to avoid you these are all things that you need to know and then you will know if she likes you or not
