Do you think it's a good thing that children don't get physically punished at school any more?

I was spanked as a child and I am not depressed nor am I angry, suicidal, or anything of that nature as a matter of fact I am the complete opposite. My mother used spanking as a last resort and I can count on one hand how many times I had to be spanked. My mother taught me to respect my elders and that included my teachers. Most of the children today are rude and uncontrollable because the parents are afraid to discipline them. It is bullsh*t when people say that spanking is the reason why children are violent or hostile. It is the entire upbringing in the home that does this. What about the children whose parents never chastised them or told them that what they were doing is wrong and now they are killing animals and people, stealing, drinking and doing drugs. Spanking your child does not lead to violent children unless that is all the see. I have had to spank my children a time or two and they are fine. my husband and I are constantly being told how well mannered and well behaved my children are. They know that we love them but that we will not tolerate disrespect. They are not angry or violent. They are excellent students, 2 of them are volunteers, 3 of them have part time jobs. So I say that if more parents spanked their children every now and again (when really needed) then this world would be a better place

Yes it is a very good thing. I really do not think it is right for someone else besides the parent to physically punish the child. I would never physically punish a kid that wasn't my own.

Actually there are 23 states that still have corporal punishment in school. I live in New Mexico on an Air Force base that has corporal punishment. Most states have determined that the school district will decide on the level of punishment. I would recommend you do research before you naturally assume that things are different than what they actually are. Listed are the states that have corporal punishment still...

Yes. Kids do not and never did deserve a physical beating if they did something wrong in school. If kids were beat as a punishment, they would grow up thinking that they had to use violence to punish someone no matter what and they would always be in fear of authority figures. Most things kids do in school to get in trouble aren't major and all they need is a stern talk and a threat.

I watched a special on PBS where one school had forms the parents filled out that explained how they wanted their children disciplined, spanking included. I think it's a excellent idea, because discipline at school and home would be consistent. I do not believe anybody has the right to tell a parent how to raise their child. I was spanked by my grandmother when I was younger and she taught me that there was going to a definite consequence for my bad behavior and it wasn't going to be a lecture I could ignore or a time-out where I could think about the next thing I was going to do to get back at her. It might not be right for every family but it was right for mine and I respect them for it.

Yes but for reasons you may not expect.
When I was in 9th grade I was caught for skipping school. My choices were to "take three licks" by the dean [a football coach] with a wooden paddle OR be suspended for three days. If you took the "licks", your parents were never told. If you took the suspension, obviously you'd have to tell your parents. I took the licks.
As a mom now, I'd want to know if my kids skipped school.

Have you ever heard of anyone sane wanting to be whacked, hurt and perhaps injured within a system where he/she has no way of fighting back against injustice?
Any teacher worth his salary has two much better ways of enforcing discipline--psychological ones and referring the child to a psychiatrist. I'm a teacher so I know.
The two basic problems with children are they're failing to deal with the real and turning that into an easy dictatorship over others, by bullying of one form or another.
Not every child is able to function among others well at every age; but if we remember the purpose of education--which is to get a single mind ready to think in scientific internal concepts, to function by being honest about when one really know that much about something and when he's just talking about outward appearances--the answer becomes obvious.
Education is for individuals, long term; it's not to make lazy ofrdictatorial teachers comfortable by letting them enjoy beating up their slaves.
We leave that sort of conduct nowadays to religious bullies, not to teachers--which is why the religious belong in monasteries and the children need secular teachers, without rulers, whips or handcuffs.

Yes, I do not think teachers have the right to put their hands on my child for any reason. Who made them judge and jury? I am responsible for disciplining my child and a call from the school or a note home is all that is needed.

I don't physically punish my children and no one else will either. It is abuse any way you look at it. I know many parents wont agree but, I don't care. Spankings etc. cause depression and aggression.

Yes, i think it is very cruel for teachers to hit their kids. A good verbal punishment will always do the trick. I mean what do the kids learn if they do something bad and get hit? Isnt that A HORRIBLE example to set for the children?!
