The same universal laws govern the simple life issues and the complex ones, so it make sense to observe them and try to understand them in the simple issues first and later try to move on to the complexities of life. Let say someone tries to understand humanity as a whole; it is a very complex issue, but understanding one person--myself, for example, is a bit easier, isn't it? That is my understanding of the quote, but I enjoyed other answers also, they seem to answer your question well, each from a different angle and to me it is a great way to learn. Thank you for asking good questions.

I think I can answer that by using another wordage of Thoreau who said(in relation to the quote noted above)
"I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings. In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them."

The laws of the universe never change, it is the change which occurs within ones self. As your life becomes simpler, there is less to worry about, and more time to reflect.

It means that when a person accepts things at "face value" or for what they really are, then the biggest mysteries in life aren't necessarily revealed, but the questions are more refined. That's my opinion....
