The same universal laws govern the simple life issues and the complex ones, so it make sense to observe them and try to understand them in the simple issues first and later try to move on to the complexities of life. Let say someone tries to understand humanity as a whole; it is a very complex issue, but understanding one person--myself, for example, is a bit easier, isn't it? That is my understanding of the quote, but I enjoyed other answers also, they seem to answer your question well, each from a different angle and to me it is a great way to learn. I think I can answer that by using another wordage of Thoreau who said(in relation to the quote noted above)
"I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. The laws of the universe never change, it is the change which occurs within ones self. As your life becomes simpler, there is less to worry about, and more time to reflect.

It means that when a person accepts things at "face value" or for what they really are, then the biggest mysteries in life aren't necessarily revealed, but the questions are more refined. That's my opinion....
