I've just relocated to NYC will be working around Herold Sq. but don't want to pay more than $1300 for a studio, so far I found some on Roosevelt Is.,so I was wondering what it is like to live there, is it safe? what's around? what's the general population like (young proffessionals, families, etc.) THANKS IN ADVANCE!

My friend grew up there and even she said it was really weird. It's it's own little town on an island. Some people just don't leave because they have everything they need there. United Nations employees and their families have lived there for years (a lot from the Third World) so about 35% of the population are foreign nationals. I've heard that it's incredibly clean and safe but people usually never even speak of it. It's as if it's taboo or something.

If you don't have a car, there's only one subway stop there (F train) but that wouldn't be so bad if you're working in Herald Sq. The Tram scares me to death. There's always the bus but some people refuse to take it no matter where they live.

Honestly, I'm completely creeped out by the place. It has a weird history (hospitals, asylums, jails) that is sort of a turn off even though it may be nice now. Maybe I'm afraid it's haunted or something. I think the buildings look strange and aren't that attractive. I'm sorry I don't have a better word for it other than 'weird', but it's just too weird for me to ever live there.

I don't know why, but whenever I think of Roosevelt Island I think of old, odd and weird....kind of spooky almost; personally, I'd rather live in a 200 sq ft studio in Manhattan proper for 1300.00 per month then Roosevelt Island; Also, there are a lot of "throwbacks" to the 70's on Roosevelt, meaning many of the people there have lived there forever and still act like they would if they were in High School...just my humble opinion...

Its a -very- strange place. There are a couple hospitals, so there are plenty of folks in wheel chairs rolling around...

When I asked which police to call (manhattan or queens) , the building manager said that 'they liked to keep that sort of thing 'on the island'" I have no idea what ththat means.

Try Astoria?
