It can be categorized in many ways.
1. Veteran of a war (War Veteran).
2. Veteran of the Military (Not War Times).
3. Veteran of a Company (Was there when it started).
There others if you include #3.
Most times it refer to a military veteran both war time and peace time.

A veteran is anyone who has served in the armed forces. Just because they didn't fight in a war doesn't mean they didn't do an important job for our country while they served.
