No. The only way a fence shorter than the length of the border will work is if there are insurmountable barriers on the rest of the border. The only substantial barrier on our southern border is desert, and the constant stream of migrants shows that the desert is not an effective barrier.
The true function of the fence shows up in the details. The funds to build the vast majority of the fence were not appropriated, which means that whether it will be built will be up to future congresses. This Congress did not consider the fence to be a funding priority, and the fact that the government is in debt doesn't mean a thing on this score, because the government will borrow whenever it feels like it. As the Democrats now control the congress, further funding for a fence appears unlikely.
Instead, the fence bill was an attempt by Congressional leadership to paint the Democrats as soft on defense if they voted against the plan. If they vote against the fence bill, that becomes a campaign issue, and if they vote for it, no big deal for the Republicans since many of their members want a fence.

a simple fence of any type will not work....as anyone can dig under it, over it, push it down w/ a vehicle, etc.
next...our government allows it cause it brings in super cheap labor for major corporations and even to be like slaves for the rich. mow their grass, etc, etc. the government is nothing but rich people who have never lived a normal life, had to actually work for money, etc so they see fit to have mexicans here as slaves. no different than our fore fathers did with blacks.
the only way to secure the border is to take it on as a project like the Hoover Dam or the Panama Canal. Must be a huge undertaking and really thought out on the engineering side.
Like a passage of water that is to wide and fast moving due to a sharp V shape canal making it too hard to cross. this is just one example of many.
I personally don't see anything every being done on the border till Americans themselves stand up and do something. We the people raised millions for Katrina people...we raised millions if not billions for the tsunami people all over the world. Why doesn't someone start a wall campaign and start collecting a few dollars from everyone. as the money comes in, hire contractors and start building it.
Highly doubt any town on the border on our side will say no to a free wall or water canal or something coming through paid for by the American people themselves.

The fence is being erected across areas that are widely used by illegals entering at large cities (like Nogales, AZ). That fence goes out far enough into the middle of nowhere that not many would try to cross there. Any who do will be reported by the Minutemen and picked up by Border Patrol. The fence is not a "stop ALL", but it is and has already proven to be a big deterrent. The fence, along with beefed up security, the National Guard, the Minutemen, and the 'virtual fence' to be initialized by Boeing, the strict penalties for entering the USA illegally and the possibility of deportation, businesses no longer hiring them and housing unavailable to them, welfare denied to them, they will not have any incentive to come here and every incentive to LEAVE!

Yes as a starter, but the government have to implement other measures in order to complete the task. Now that the Democrats won the Congress I don't think the fence is going to get build or the illegal immigration problem is going to be taken care of. The Democrats/Liberals and the President of the USA are going to side with the Corporations and give the illegals the amnesty that they are looking for. Everything is going to get worse for the middle class Americans. I don't think that the Democratic Party care about the middle class people over the big interests of the country.

Its a good start, but you would have to tweak it a little bit. First add luxury parapets every 1/4 mile that could be rented to NRA enthusiasts for a nominal fee which would then go to subsidize the cost of electrifying the fence at roving intervals, just to keep them guessing. Let's see now, 2800 parapets with fancy double wides at the mile marks to cater to families, clubs, and civic minded groups, filled with people willing to pay for the opportunity to discourage illegal undesirables all while providing national security at a potentially deficit reducing profit. BRILLANT!

The illegals have been interviewed by news reporters and they tell they fear the fence that will keep them out. I think it will be a big deterrent. Now the dems/liberals are in charge the fence will never be built if they have their say. They are sympathetic to their plight.

No. It's not even going to be built. Funds were only allocated for about 90 miles of it. And I'd put money on that not even being built.
Not to mention, the 9/11 hijackers came into this country LEGALLY.

It helps in urban areas where people can swarm the border and disapear into yards by scattering. Even if border patrol is watching, they catch only a few.
However, I haven't seen it built yet.
