We have several chickens, only one lets itself be held by a person. Is there any way they can become more friendly? Theyre hens.

I've had chickens that were born and raised by the "parents" and some I have raised from an incubator. The ones from the incubator when constantly monitored are more likely to come to you for affection and feed. Once in a while if a hen has a chick they will come to me for a scratch on the head or treats, but this makes the mother and other chicks upset and watching them through my window I see the favored chick "by me" not treated so well by the mom or siblings. I think the one that goes to a person should be kept separate from the others.

This is my opinion.... and I'm not an expert. If you handle them a lot when they are young chicks, it is possible to have a friendlier chicken. I have a few different breeds of chickens. I have found that my Rhode Island Reds are very protective and agressive. I found that my Americauna's are super sweet and very friendly. Not only that, but they lay beautifully colored eggs. I have decided when it's time to get a new flock, I will get all Americauna's.

There is a great magazine, it's a new magazine and it's called Backyard Chicken. I enjoy it. It's wierd to say. I recommend it to other chicken enthusiasts.

I grew up with chickens. Some can become more friendly, some cannot. Spend time with them. They can become good pets, if you are gentle with them from a young age. Though they probably will never walk up to you to be held, once you catch them they should relax a bit.

Birds, chickens in particular, are leery of human contact if they aren't socialized from a young age. But it is possible to gradually gain their trust. Always act calm and treat them gentle and they may warm up to you.

It really depends on the chicken. Some can be handled when young, and still grow to be independent.

Well you have to hold them daily when they are younger so that they get used to being held and stay with it when they get older. Otherwise they kinda forget and may stop liking it.

They know your long term plan. Would you be friendly with another species which stole and ate your eggs and may one day eat you?
