Yes, we still use 'chao' when we say good-bye. Just like we also sometimes say 'bay' (bye). Of course we have our own word: adiós, which we use most of the time. I think the use of chao, bay or adiós depends on the social-economic level of the person. Most rich/highly educated people would tend to say chao more often than the rest of the people. Adiós is the correct word to say good-bye in Spanish, but is very strong and gives the idea of a definitive good-bye (forever), so we avoid using it. That{s why we prefer the expressions with 'hasta' like: hasta la vista hasta mañana hasta el lunes or we can also use 'nos vemos....' nos vemos más tarde nos vemos en la noche nos vemos mañana Ciao = Chao = Tchau (Brazilian Portuguese). I think 'Chau' is used in South America. Hasta means 'until' also 'till'.

Hola...

You could say "Adiós" or even "Bye" and most people will understand. I think you may find these two free Spanish lessons useful to learn a lot about Spanish greetings as we use them in Latin America. They include videos, listening activities and interactive quizzes. Espero sean de utilidad para ti.

in Mexico if you say it in English -bye bye- most people will understand it, we use it more than adiós since adiós is a more definitive good bye and bye is for a short period of absence

and that´s a 2 pointer
