How about a subscription to Readers Digest?
If he golfs, a gift certificate for two at his favorite golf course would be very nice.
If he drinks wine, a good bottle of wine would be perfect.
How about a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant. He and your mil can go together. Men love to take their wives out...especially when they are still happily married!
Find out what his hobbies are. Does he read, play sports, watch video's? You could get him his favorite video series...like Cheers or Mash or something like that. Ask your mil. She knows him better than anyone.
There are really cool gifts at Brookstone.com. If you go online, or to the store, and you can definitely find something cool there.
Whatever you get him, I think it will be just right because you are asking people for suggestions. That means that getting the right gift for him is important to you. So I think that whatever you get him, it will be just right!

Does he have any hobbies you could get him a present that is based around his hobby.
Or tickets to the theatre or take him to a show
It might just be nice if you took him for a nice meal, just you your husband your mother and father in law and you pay for the meal at his favourite restaurant

Depending on how much time you have, you could put together a This is your life scrapbook for him.. Collect pictures, new and old, may be news clippinngs of events that took place over the course of his 70 years....Let your imagination run wild with all kinds of things to put into it.. Good luck..Hope this helps.

What about a newspaper from the day he was born or the date they got married - all done in a nice presentation. We did this for my father in law and he loved it - they were giggling over the ads and stuff like school kids. Try this site

A new liver and couple of kidneys probably wouldn't go a miss....
but seriously.... how about a family portrait with all his brothers, sisters, sons and daughters and grandkids and then youse all going out for a meal together.... when u get older money doesn't matter as much and it's the time that people spend with you and the things they say and do for you that count.....
