I am buying a house with a bedroom that has older paneling probably from 50's maybe 60's. I would love to put up wallpaper. Is it possible to put wallpaper on top of paneling. Help me please.

Regular paneling requires a treatment first. If the paneling has groves or nail holes, these need to be filled in. A good wood putty will work just fine. Lightly sand smooth.

If the paneling is light then it only needs to have a "sizing" treatment before wallpapering. If it is very dark (especially if the paper is also very light), then for best results, paint the paneling first. Sand lightly to rough up the surface, then paper as usual.

Try a small inconspicuous area and see what happens. The issue I would think would be the spaces or dips between the paneling - it seems like it would show even with wallpaper.

edit: I thought I saw something on TV where they put dry wall spackle over the paneling to fill in grooves and then painted. I'm not sure if that would work with wallpaper but I don't know why not.

As a former painting contractor I would never attempt to put wallpaper over paneling. To me you are asking for some major headaches. Adhesion would be a serious problem and the groves in the paneling will be hard to fill with something that will stay there. Traditionally most paneled walls have sheetrock behind them. Removing the paneling and repairing the wall will be an easy solution. Make sure you use a latex paint primer on the walls. This will help with adhesion.

i would do it. you can paint over the paneling and even fill the cracks from the panels so its flat. then you could faux finish the walls so it looks more dramatic and has the feel of wall paper. i did this. i sponged painted a faux finish on the walls using a lighter and darker shade of the same color. the darker shade on top. They all look fantastic. everyone thinks its wall paper but they cant find the seams. I used peach on peach, pink on pink. cream and mocca, and i did a friends, sage green and a darker sage green. they look amazing Good luck and have fun with it. decorating doest need to be a chore it can be fun

You need to go get some kind of wall to go over the paneling. That way the wall paper will stick. You can get the walls already covered.

my friend did that and used really thick paper. she had the issue with the grooves going up and down and filled them in with spackling, but over time they have started to crumble and the wall paper is coming off slowly but surley. Maybe not us the spackling like she did and there will be no problem.

Save your time and money. Fillers and spackle will dry and crack over time. You will be disappointed in the final result.
