You cannot give Democracy to anyone. All you can do is show what it is and show them a way. The rest is up to them. The Iraq people have to want democracy. (all of them) It can be really difficult to know it is what you want if you have never had Democracy and have no idea what it really means.

Most Iraqi citizens have access to print media or news now whereas in the past, they only had access to state run television. They are very aware of what democracy is and what it will do for their life and future. Without exception, all communication I have had with friends serving in that theater have been of a positive nature. The improvements in the public utilities, hospitals, schools and public buildings has been welcomed by the citizens. The radical faction there is a small part of the headcount sadly making the most press in America while the positive views have been largely ignored.

I think the US invasion was the opposite of democracy. In fact, polls show that the majority of the Iraqis want the military to leave.

In the past three elections the Iraq people have defied death threats from the terrorists in order to vote.
If they are willing to risk their lives in order to vote for democracy - I would say that: a) they know what democracy is and b) they want it.
The Iraqi people have voted for democracy. This is what they want and an indication of the future they desire.
Why do you want to deny the Iraqi people this?

You cannot expect the Iraqis to become like Americans - the fate of their country should be in their own hands as the current situation clearly demonstrates.
Democracy is an idea not part of poltical evoloution and so not for everyone. A democatic Iraq might be good for the US because then they could install a puppet government.

Soldiers who have returned say that your normal Iraqi citizens are happy with the US presence, because it keeps the extremists in line a bit. The EXTREMISTS are the troublemakers!
Too bad the media never gives a clear picture of the civilian point of view!

I think they want to end the sectarian violence now and don't have time to think about Democracy. But for the sake of U.S interest, Iraq must be a democratic country.
