Cubans are also good, hard working people. The difference between them and Mexicans is that Mexico is a democracy and Cuba is led by a dictator who has denied its citizens freedom.

Why do we give illegals a pass and send the Cubans back? Why isn't this matter considered while we are fighting about immigration.

The guest worker program is another name for amnesty and it is unfair to U.S. citizens, Mexicans who want to enter legally and the Cubans.

Why don't politicians make sense?

The wet feet, dry feet policy
(sometimes called the wet-foot, dry-foot policy)
is the name given to a consequence
of the 1995 revision of the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966
that says, essentially,
that anyone who fled Cuba and got into the United States
would be allowed to pursue residency a year later.

After talks with the Cuban government,
the Clinton administration came to an agreement with Cuba
that it would stop admitting people found at sea.

Since then,
in what has become known as the "wet feet, dry feet" policy,
a Cuban caught on the waters between the two nations
(i.e., with "wet feet")
would summarily be sent home or to a third country.
One who makes it to shore ("dry feet")
gets a chance to remain in the United States,
and later would qualify
for expedited "legal permanent resident" status
and U.S. citizenship.

Ah, the inconsistencies of life...how about a) build the border fence, b) continue pushing employer enforcement, c) push for city/state/county involvement, d)push for parity of immigration policy nationwide, no 'amnesty cities' etc., and e) put about 200 coast guard boats in the water around florida, 24/7. The people trying to enter the USA illegally from both Mexico and Cuba will cry bloody murder, but let em. This is the 21st century now, they, too, can build their own necessary infrastructure, train their own doctors, build their own schools, so forth and so on.

100 years ago, there were only 90 million americans. Today, 100 years later, there are 300 million. 100 years ago, there were only 1.5 billion people in the whole world. Today, there are 6.5 billion people. Think water table, sewage/water/ garbage, roads, power, public services, school overcrowding, so forth and so on. New century, new approach, here....

Because water is open domain and once you touch the Americas, you must touch land. I believe we do allow equality for all who wish to come legally. Cuba does have a problem with a dictator and until they resolve that themselves...what can we do> They must be willing to stand and up and fight for what they believe in and they don't. so that's there decision.

we favor nationwide criteria that keep on with to ALL immigrants, not purely cubans, not purely haitians, not purely africans, etc.legal reform's quite darn major, inspite of Congress finally ends up passing had more effective be finished, with a wide emphasis on deterrence... i imagine, pardon the pun, that everybody is 'lacking the boat' on immigration. purely look at switzerland. somewhat 3 shovelfuls of airborne dirt and mud, switzerland's a tremendous us of a. they extremely have their act mutually. different international places, consisting of ours, might want to do nicely to emulate Switzerland....i do not care how a lot of a wretched hollow you ran remote from, it will save being a wretched hollow until eventually YOU face as a lot as fix it and make it good...and that is the bitter truth. maximum immigrants are fleeing something, not transferring deliberately to make a occupation flow. The vast majority are attempting like HELL to flee poverty and worse. Predation on the adverse is 20 cases worse in second and third international international places than that is in 1st international international places on their worst mastercard-issuing binge. issue is, no human being ever is going decrease back to the rustic they got here from to fix er up, might want to YOU flow there? C'mon, be honest, might want to YOU flow there? it really is why I have a good number of observe of for missionaries and help workers and stuff, they extremely DO care about the welfare of those in adverse international places. purely issue is, all the being concerned contained in the international received't fix such issues as out-of-administration inhabitants develop, tolerance of crime by both deepest activities OR authorities officials, lack of a very good and moral legal device, lack of elements, in short, abject poverty, and individuals are requested to grant, provide provide, to attempt to assist concerns, yet reform has to commence on the authentic, and set up and protect solid values. a sad area of this finished tale has been the UN....unhappy, unhappy days...

Many questions there.

First, the idea of making Cubans hit land started decades ago. There was an influx of Cubans (some arguably being sent by Fidel Castro from prisons). Just about all of them argue that they are entitled to be allowed in the country due to the threat of prosecution/harm if they are deported. They were put in camps by the thousand, awaiting hearing, almost all of them eventually sent back.

Now, the answer to the second question works with the first. We do not allow ANY immigrants to receive hearings and applications for admission until they reach the land. The difference is that it is easier to see and stop people trying to get here by water (coast guard, radar, etc.) than it is over a land border.

Once here, the illegal immigrants (cuban or otherwise) get to stay until they get caught -- and we really don't go looking. The difference is that if they are caught on the high-seas (international waters), we can stop them from getting to America. If they are walking along (for example) the Mexican border, we can't go over and stop them (breach of international law) and, even if we could, all we would do is return them (for example) to Mexico (which is where they were caught anyway).

Once we catch illegal immigrants in Arizona (for example) from Mexico (for example), who do not have entry visas or permission to be here, they get sent back to Mexico (just like the Cubans).

Of course, those coming in from Mexico can try to get back in the next day, the Cubans have to try to get here by boat -- which takes much longer.

You are right that the guest worker program is virtually amnesty. But here's the deal. Most of those people are not documented, we do not go looking for them, and we do not find them unless they are arrested for something else. The Guest Worker program would require that these undocumented workers register, and then (if we put in the resources), we can ensure that they are being productive members of communities and not welfare recipients, etc.

There are various other proposals on how to take care of the problem. One is to spend BILLIONS more on border patrol and immigration officers, whose job it will be to try and stop the illegal entry and those who have entered. The problem is that, when Mexicans (if employed) get a few dollars per day, even a minimum wage job earns them literally ten times what they could earn in Mexico. There is every incentive to keep returning to America. And all we do is send them back to Mexico.

So, perhaps we should put them in prison if we catch them? Good idea, until you realilze that it costs appx. $40,000 per year for each of them. If we jail each for only one year, and only jail one million of them, it would cost $40 BILLION dollars just for the incarceration costs.

What is the solution? One solution is to actully enforce laws on the books (that would be novel!) Instead of going after the immigrants themselves, we actually prosecute and jail those who employ illegal immigrants. Right now, employers face a small fine if they are ever caught, and that virtually never happens. So, they save money by hiring illegal immigrants. What would happen to these business owners if they knew that they would not only get fined, but actually be going to JAIL for a year or two if they employ illegal immigrants? ANSWER - at first, nothing, for they will not believe it will be enforced. But after the first few actually get prosecuted and get sentenced to jail, employers will actually ensure that their workers are properly documented. It may be cheaper to hire illegal immigrants, but these guys will not go to jail for it.

This, however, would substantially increase the cost of doing business (there are jobs Americans won't do unless paid more), which could increase inflation, etc. So, the government really does not want to do this. Republicans do not want to pass a law that will put their base in danger of going to jail (plus as felons they cannot vote in most states), and democrats are not really interested in causing increased inflation and the economic problems. So the solution -- those immigrants here must register and can only stay when they are employed, and can document their employment. This ensures taht they will pay taxes, cannot get improper benefits, etc.

Is this a solution? It depends where you are on the issue. But it sure does not make sense to spend $50 BILLION per year more to solve a problem that can be solved at a fraction of the cost by enforcing existing laws against employers.
