I know one reason why the police forces choose male dogs predominately: Their observation is that male dogs will go out to get the bad guys on command, while females generally will stay by your side & wait for him to come after you. I was told this by a K9 officer. As for my own dogs, I have noticed if they hear a strange/threatening noise, the males are more likely to go investigate, while the females will growl but stick close by.

Females are a bit more protective, males are a little more agressive. Females don't pee on everything that they think they need to identify as their territory. I brought a new male dog home once and another male was already living in my basement with a friend. They went around the yard & everything that one peed on the other peed on right behind him. Next thing I know they were peeing on each other. I think that is where the term "pissing contest" came from! LOL

A lot depends on your breed of dogs. Males seem to be a little more playful and females a little more on the serious side. Males can be aggressive and females more protective. I have always preferred the males.

females tend to be more faithful and laid back. males can be more full on and dominant a firmer control is needed for training. however it also depends on the way a dog is brought up. i have worked with many dogs and both males and females can be dominant.

females tend to be more loyal, but males are more dominant.
also much depends on the breed you choose. like setters are abit skitish but border collies are just plain nuts and love to play. whatever you decide to get always check out if you can cope with all its possible good and bad traits

Males are more aggressive early in their lives, passive later in adulthood. Females are the opposite, and tend to be nuturing and smart.
