what do you think interior design is?

what does an interior design do? i'm doing a case study on public perception and could really use some POVs.

They show people how to decorate their homes and create coordinating colors for furniture, drapes, paintings, etc.
Sometimes I think that they just work in a store to create showcases but other times they actually go to people's homes.
