Okay... well I'm 18 years old. I got braces in the 6th grade and had them until the 10th grade. Well, apparently when I got them off, they didn't help that much.. which sucks. And they didn't give me a retainer, which sucks even worse. So for the past few years, my teeth have just been getting even more crooked than they already are. So we went to the dentist recently and she said I needed to have the surgery where they break your jaw before I could get braces again... or invisilign, to fix my crookedness. I am really self-conscious of this, but this surgery is definitely a major surgery if you ask me. And I was just wondering if anyone here had had that surgery and what it was like and the outcome and stuff like that? Something to help me make my decision would be great. Thank you!!!

Jaw Breaking Surgery

The surgery you are referring to is "orthognathic surgery". Look at it this way: lots of people don't have teeth that line up and bite perfectly; sometimes the problem is that the teeth aren't in the right place in the jaws, but sometimes the problem is that the jaws aren't in the right place.
Typically, orthodontists will try to correct the dental alignment with braces. Even if the problem is a jaw discrepancy, your teeth can sometimes be aligned adequately with braces.
If the jaw discrepancy is bad enough, you can undergo orthognathic surgery to correct it. After the orthodontist does some pre-surgery alignment, the oral surgeon will cut your mandible and/or maxilla (upper jaw) and line them up in a proper bite. Then he/she uses small plates & screws to hold the jaws in place. Most of the incisions for this surgery are made inside your mouth to minimize scarring. You're correct, this is significant surgery.
The surgery takes a few hours. The hard part is the recovery. You'd be swollen in the face for a few weeks. Most of my patients are very happy with their results and tell me they are glad they decided to do the surgery.
I have seen/done several of these surgeries, and the results are amazing. Not only does the bite improve, it can help alleviate stress on the TMJ and improve your facial appearance.

This is something that you need to talk to your orthodontist about, but it can produce fantastic results.

This is major surgery with significant risks. I find it strange that your dentist would suggest that you NEED your jaw "broken" before you could get braces again. Normally the other way around.
You've not been happy with previous results, so you need to have someone explain why previous treatment failed before you start again.
Go and see at least 2 orthodontists for opinions and explanations of your past treatment and future options. What are the risks? What are the outcomes? Will it relapse? If they suggest orthognathic surgery, then see a couple of oral surgeons for their opinions.
