This is just simply from thinking, but here is my hunch.

1.) It usues multiple sensors ie, sonar, cameras to align itself to the parking spot. These sensors calculate distance, have the ability to get a visual on the targeted spot etc. Then the programming takes the rest.

2.) It's all about the sensors you have! Ask yourself this question...How does a heat seaking rocket follow a target?
Sensors sensors sensors! and a bit of programming of course!

i saw a video on it from the lexus's webpage.. you can check it out.. it is all computer programed.. all you need to do is work the breaks.. its kinda weird to me and dont think i would trust a computer chip to steer my car..
