My niece is staying with me (or should i say im staying with her) and I have seen the homework stress before but now Im just plain concerned. She hasn't been able to hang out with friends once this year, every holiday the family plans on traveling and she cant go because projects are assigned for everyone (and they teachers wont give them the work before hand so she cant do it earlier) and i hate having to leave her home for sometimes a week (shes only 13! but she needs to go to the library and she needs her computer). This weekend she had to outline 2 chapters in history (5 hours each), chapter 10 & 11 vocabulary (40-50 each ch.), begin a 10 page essay, in science build a volcano and write a paper on it, in math do 70 problems (and theyre algerbra and hard-6 hours in fact beacause the teacher makes her write out everything and for fun graph every problem) and she has to study for a health and history test tomorrow and about 2 hours more in some stupid busywork!

Why can't she just be a kid? She works from the moment she gets home til 2 am every night and she wont go to bed because its due tomorrow!

Her parents have talked to the teachers and they just say we have to give it or they wont pass the state tests (she wont because she wears herself out first!) and if she doesnt do it she fails!

I had to drug her with sleeping pills last night because she worked til 3 am and wasnt stopping!

she hasnt been able to go to church once this year and only 4 times last year!

She does have a study hall she uses to the max. and she works in class she has to multi task doing homework and learning (which she can somehow do) and she works during her lunch period instead of eating. Its homework and from the moment she wakes up to the moment she goes to sleep.

I do think school is important but why must she bring it home all night? A little bit of homework like an hour or so i can see but she works for 12 hours sometimes! She cant eat dinner with the family because she is working on homework! and weekends are days where they can assign more work, not a break!

My husband and I fully understand where your coming from!

We help, and help allot. We want our daughter to have life outside of school but what her to do well in school. So the things we do help her on we make sure she fully understands it. We also make sure she has at lest ONE day of down time (no school work and no after school activity). My husband and I have also made trips to the school as well as emailing the teachers to stay ahead of what she has due, that way its not always a last minute rush. We also use the web to its utmost availability to aid her with essays and research.

I hope this helps out some. :)

Hi, I really beleive that I have the answer to this one, because I've been thinking of this pretty much since I was in High School, and I am about to graduate from my Bachelor. Althought I need to work in putting into practice more often what I will show you, I belive it coul help you somehow.
Ok. What I believe is best, at first, is to LAY OUT in front of you all your subjects, that way you can prepare to oversee what you are about to get into. Second, determine the things that you could get out of the way the quikest, in other words, start working on the things that will require less stress, and then continue to tackle those that requiue more time and are more complicated.
Be sure not to let NOT EVEN A DAY pass by you, because if you let that happen the overload will crush you (just as it is happening to me at this time) . In other words, do not waist time, and that means that if you are doing something -or nothing- when you have homework, then you are waisting time and, you are lacking in establishing your priorities. In the end, you must realize that in order to be succesful in this matter, as well as in the most important things in life, you must have DICIPLINE.
Good luck!

WOW 8th grade... my school doesnt really believe in homework so i only have one essay to finish.. anyways my tips are: 1- get a whiteboard and write all the stuff you need to do on it, so that you will never forget 2- get tivo or similar, tape your fave shows and instead of whatching them tape them and watch them another time, or do your homework in front of the tv 3- dont be too hard on yourself and have a 5 minute break every hour (usually eat tim-tams im my break XD) 4- talk to your teachers and ask them for an extension, tell them you are having trouble and if they are half decent people they will give you a little more time to finish. 5- spend some lunchtimes doing your homework, just a little time each day will get you a long way :) when you get to year 11 you get frees, or at least i do and that gives you more time to do your work. I hope this helps Bye mate

This is one of the reasons why I believe that school should be all year rather then half the year. And kids only go to school, after vacations, half the year. It puts too much of a stress on the teachers to teach and the students to learn so much in too short a period of time. I think that there is too much work given to highschoolers. The excuse is to prepare them for real life, but how many adults do you know go to work for 8 hours and then come home to do 4 more hours of work and projects during vacations.

It sounds like you have teachers that want to make sure that your niece gets the best education possible. As a teacher, I assign homework every night and I also give students time in class to start the assignment so they can get help if they need it. Very few students take advantage of this and choose to sit around and talk and complete the homework at home. I would talk to your niece and make sure that she is using the class time that she is given.

You may want to try talking to the counselor at school and see if having a study hall period is an option. I know that it is at might school and this helps students stay on top of their homework.

That much homework sounds a bit extreme, but there really isn't anything you can do about it :/

I'm a sophomore (15) and trust me, the homework load really doesn't get any lighter.
