And peter said to them, repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall recieve the gift of the holy spirit.

Acts 2:38 = then Peter sail unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Repent = Change your Mind
Be Baptized = Submersed in water
The Name of Jesus = This is where you power lies
The Holy Ghost = Refers back to Acts 2: 1-4
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

It says what it means and means what it says. Instead of trying to find hidden meaning in scripture and trying to change the meaning, just look at it that it simply means what it says. See Mark16:16 ,Romans 6:3, 4, 5, & 6: 1 Peter 3:21 and many other verses. I beleive the scripture is clear.
the problem is people try to make scripture say something it does not say to justify their own doctrine.
Some will say there is more than one baptism but let's see what Paul had to say in Ephesians 4:4,5 6:There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called in one hope of your calling(5) one Lord, One faith , one baptism. (6) One God and father of all, who is above ll and through all and in all. how many baptism did Paul say there is? ONE!
Those who say there is more than one baptism is preaching something different than what Paul preached see Galations 1::8, 9 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you let him be accursed. (9) As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have recieved let him be accursed.
Paul used some pretty strong language, but he was speaking under the direction of the Holy Spirit.
People will also tell you, that the baptism of fire is the baptism you desire, but if you look at what the baptism of fire is, you will not want it. Baptism of fire is the trials and tribulations suffered to those who eventually were killed for their beleifs. some were beheaded and others had the flesh ripped off them and this was the baptism or the emersion of trails brought on by the Roman Empire. All but one apostle was killed for his service to Christ.
If water is not the baptism that is essential for salvation then someone forgot to tell Phillip when he preached to the Ethiopian Eunch in Acts chapter 8 Read verses 35, 36, 37 & 38 : Then Phillip opened his mouth and beginning at this scripture preached Jesus to him. (36) Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, " See here is water. What hinders me from being baptized? (37) Then Phillip said, " fif you beleive with all your heart, you may." and he answered him ," I believe that Jesus christ is the Sone of God. (38) So he commanded the chariot to stand still and both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
In this scripture water was used and both Phillip went down into the water and the eunuc was baptized.
If you read all of chapter 8 you will find other examples of Philip preaching and people being baptized.

Everyone is called/invited to repent from sin... then a change for the better is made by receiving, accepting, being filled with the Holy Spirit... & then will be given salvation/freedom from sin/hell.

i know what it means, However most people misunderstand this, they believe you MUST Get baptised in order to recieve the Holy Ghost, baptism is merely one way of recieving the Holy Ghost, remember the example the Bible discussed, how these group of people, who by merely hearing the Word, recieved the Holy Ghost.
Do you realize, that John the Baptist, was never baptised ?
Do you also realize, there is more then one kind of baptism.
Mt:3:11: I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Two different Baptisms, one of water and one of fire. Therefore it is WRONG to automatically assume when the Bible refers to baptism, as it being the kind by water.
ACTS 2:38: Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Is this referring to water baptism, or the baptism Christ gives ? to automatically assume it is water is incorrect. John the Baptist, baptised with water, Jesus baptises with fire. Therefore if we are to be baptized through Jesus, it would not have been by water, but through the fire.
So then it is Unbiblical for people to teach or instruct people they MUST get baptised by WATER, that is just not biblical.

Rosey, I'd suggest placing the verse in context in here, so people can read what you are asking.
I believe it to be true (after locating that chapter) but remember to take it into context.

It means that if you want to follow Christ, you must "repent and be baptized." To repent means to TURN FROM sin, changing the direction of your life from selfishness and rebellion against God's laws. At the same time, you must TURN TO Christ, depend on him for forgiveness, mercy, grace and purpose.
We cannot save ourselves-only God can save us.
