Two reasons that I can see. 1) Most guys would rather let sleeping dogs ly! 2) Many posts are controlled by the real old timers who do things their way, and their way only. This doesn't bode well for the younger members. Let me add a third reason. 3) I personally do things for our local MEPS station, but I do them on my terms, with my money, and on my timetable. It's never that spontaneous because I always pass it by the senior NCO before moving forward, in this way he has the first right of refusal.
Usually, we plan these things together, so there is no conflict.

This only my personal opinion, but I've heard it from many Veterans. I am a life member in the VFW and have belonged to the DAV for years. I've never joined the American Legion. I've been in many of their posts and one thing always strikes me.The room can be full, but there are very few Veterans. It seems the admit anyone into the bar to drink. Prior service is not required. It seems making money at the bar is their priority. The other two organizations I mentioned are more exclusive, not just a place for every drunk in town to hang out . The other organizations seem to be more interested in helping Veterans in need and with claims and benefits with the VA. Just my opinion.

American legion, it seems to me, basked in the glow In a manner of speaking) of WWII. Patriotism is no longer the same and if it wants new members, the legion will have to change its outlook somehow. Find new ways to attract members (and support members).

More members in the Legion than the VFW. Easier to join Legion than VFW. Better operated too. Check out their web sites. VFW not as big, not as many members. Legion, more clout.

Both VFW and AL are seeing a drop in younger members, so every post you go will have a ratio of older veterans than new ones. Both VFW and AL have their own standards. You have to have served during a conflict for VFW and AL (Anyone who served after 2001 is eligible). However, in VFW you MUST be a Citizen of the U.S. to join AL you don't have to be a citizen.

Everyone remembers legionnaire's disease, at a American legion Convention people became terribly ill, some died, food poisonings, aka Legionnaires disease. VFW is a more popular organization.
