For most people its both- a good serman will get you thinking though- even if you disagree- right? I don't go anymore due to the commercializtion of the huge churches where I live. My spirit needs the quiet and growth I get by myself and my daily prayers abd thank yous- not someone reinterptrting what Jesus taught or whatt the Bible says and telling me what truth it is- UGH! I do miss the warm sociality of my childhood church experiences though and that is the basis of the idea- a gathering of "like minds"

Spiritual. My social needs are met outside the church primarily. So when I go to service on Sunday morning it is for spiritual reasons and to learn.

Church or religion may well have become both to many and either to some however any true spiritual or social value, regarding that which underlies all, is not segregated to any church or religion or social status

The bible says in Hebrews 10:25

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some; is but exhorting one another, and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Basically God wants us to come together for meet not only our own spiritual and social needs, but the needs of others in our spiritual family.

I go for both.

I go to learn scriptural truths in regards to God has to share with us. But I also go for my social needs because I have friends there and we share our connection through the church. The Bible states that Church is for fellowship. Churches can help us build relationships with people who have similar goals and values, as well as give us people that will help and support us and for whom we can do the same.

For instance, today, we had envelopes available to help a woman who needs a scholarship to go back to school. We also have a food pantry as well as other issues in the church. So the church, in addition to helping us spiritually, has two-fold social purpose. One is to build relationships and the other is to connect people together.

I go to church to repent for my social needs! Just kidding. I go to church for my spiritual needs. It helps with my happiness, and makes my week go better. I think the fellowship helps fulfill my spiritual needs; helps to make me stronger.

I must say I have lived in Riverside County since 1998, yet have not found a suitable spirit filled atmosphere. I see that alot of churches have, adapted to the ways of this world. Therefore, I remain in Gods way and his purpose for me is acknowledged in my walk, sometimes run! (SPIRITUAL NEEDS)

You would be amazed at how many people attend church for just the social function.

I know guys who pick their church based on how much money each of the other members earn. They do this for job contacts.

I know ladies who pick their church based on their friends, so they can talk.
